Kyrie Irving emerged as a prime target for the Los Angeles Lakers in the pursuit of a 2022 season playoff berth. Yet, Lakers GM Rob Pelinka’s offer failed to entice the Brooklyn Nets into trading Irving to LA. As a result, the 30-year-old point guard found himself heading to Dallas instead.

After joining the Dallas Mavericks and playing alongside Luka Doncic, Irving broke his silence at a recent Practice Press conference regarding the offers from the Lakers. Irving discussed how close he came to reuniting with Lebron James and joining the Lakers this off-season.

Kyrie said, “It wasn’t too difficult of a process, I had Dallas as number one on my list obviously looked elsewhere salary cap, an opportunity where I could fit in with other guys around the league, but there wasn’t much space, so…me being 31 now I had a different advantage point felt like I could not just settle here but be happy to comeback here and be welcomed back with a warm embrace…So, I took everything into account. I just wanted to be myself. And then going on the last few years, just figuring myself out. So I think this is the best place to do it and continue to mature and grow as a man.”

Kyrie took everything into account and eventually decided to stay with the Mavericks. He signed a $126 million contract which was notably equipped with a player option for its final season. It also incorporated an intriguing incentive structure totaling $6 million. This structure consisted of two components: an annual $1 million bonus for playing a minimum of 65 games and an additional $1 million if the team achieves 50 or more wins while Irving participates in at least 58 games.

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban’s insights on the Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic partnership

In a recent interview with ESPN, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban shed light on the chemistry between two stars of his team, Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic. He shared his perspective on the team and said, “You know I think a little bit of time with Kyrie and Luka together in pre-season helps a lot, you know we going to Abu Dhabi so we all be together for 10 days I think that will help build a lot of the chemistry.”

Despite falling short of the playoffs last season, Cuban remained optimistic about the potential impact of the Irving-Doncic partnership. He also emphasized the same during a podcast episode with NBA player Pat Beverley. Cuban shared his perspectives on Irving’s character and mindset.

Kyrie wants to connect with people, understand his own history, and continue personal growth,” Cuban explained. “He’s an exceptionally intelligent individual who recognizes that this is unequivocally Luka’s team. There’s no room for debate – it’s Luka’s team, and Kyrie is fully aware of the situation.” Cuban has the utmost confidence in Irving to help the Mavericks make a deep post-season run in the upcoming season.
