“When it comes to leadership, Kyrie Irving is not that” Kendrick Perkins pounces on Kevin Durant to take over the Nets captaincy following 2-6 start
Kendrick Perkins and Kevin Durant
Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving’s wish of getting Steve Nash fired from the Brooklyn Nets have come true. The team announced on Tuesday that they were parting ways with the coach after their win against the Indiana Pacers. Durant had offered owner Joe Tsai an ultimatum to fire both Nash and general manager Sean Marks following a tumultuous summer. Since then the superstar duo of Irving and KD couldn’t look eye-to-eye with Nash and hence a change in the management was inevitable.
Speaking on the matter Kendrick Perkins trolled the Brooklyn Nets for coming to a “mutual decision” when it came to firing Steve Nash but also spoke about how Kevin Durant would need to lead from the front now that he’s gotten his wishes fulfilled. Perkins stated, “So what I’m looking at right now is ‘okay KD I haven’t seen your leadership skills on the floor thus far in this young season, can I see them now? Now that Steve Nash is out, are you gonna be there vocally or be their guided brain and get the most out of guys like Ben Simmons and Claxton? Kevin Durant is the guy I’m going to be watching the most.”
He further went on to say, “Look we can talk about Kyrie Irving, he’s spectacular, he’s box office but when it comes to leadership Kyrie Irving is not there. I’m holding Kevin Durant accountable for the leadership of this lineup.” Surely the Nets have a lot going on with their head coach getting fired and Kyrie Irving getting himself involved in controversies but they cannot get distracted this early in the season. As Kendrick Perkins said KD should assume leadership and pull his team together.
What’s next to come for Kevin Durant and Co
What happens to the Brooklyn Nets henceforth is unknown. However, a decision may be made by Thursday with Ime Udoka who is a front-runner to replace Nash. The Boston Celtics have given Udoka a season-long suspension for breaking team rules. Udoka was found to have improper personal contact with a female employee.
Udoka is regarded as a defensive expert. He served as the Nets’ defensive coordinator for the 2020–21 season. He might be the answer for a Brooklyn team that is having trouble defensively but still wants to contend for the championship. Clearly, the two superstars like to do things their way. The new head coach should make sure he is on the same page as his two most crucial players since the Nets heavily rely on Durant and Irving.
