Kyrie Irving has been striving to return to the championship ever since leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers and LeBron James after the 2016 championship run. He has moved around the league, going from Boston to Brooklyn, and finally landing in Dallas to team up with another superstar in Luka Doncic, aiming for postseason success. It appears, from the media day before training camp, that Kyrie has been welcomed with open arms by the Texan team.
Kyrie Irving took the mic at the Dallas Mavericks media day recently, where he answered questions from reporters. There, he expressed how grateful he was to be playing for Dallas. He went on to mention how he wishes he could have been drafted by the team because of how well the organization treats its players. “I wish I would’ve been drafted by Dallas initially. Obviously, they weren’t in a position in 2011, but just feeling how this organization wraps its arms around the guys,” Irving said.
The Mavericks really weren’t in a position to draft Kyrie in 2011, as they had just defeated Kyrie’s future teammate LeBron James and the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals. LeBron was still three years away from joining Kyrie in Cleveland, which was the worst team in the league and had the chance to draft Irving even though he only played 11 games for Duke.
Kyrie Irving says it was an easy decision for him to sign an extension with Dallas
Kyrie Irving re-signed with the Dallas Mavericks after agreeing to a three-year, $126 million contract at the start of free agency. During Dallas’ media day right before training camp, Kyrie shed light on what made him re-sign with the Mavs and how difficult the decision was for him, given the fact he got traded away from a playoff-bound Brooklyn Nets to a team that didn’t even make it to the play-in tournament.
For Kyrie, that didn’t really factor into the decision because of his belief in the franchise. During the media interaction, he said that the decision wasn’t too difficult for him. Dallas was number 1 on his list.
He did consider other situations, but Dallas seemed like the perfect place for him to stay. He said, “It wasn’t too difficult of a process. Had Dallas as No. 1 on my list. Obviously, I looked elsewhere — salary cap opportunities, where I could fit in with other guys around the league — but there just wasn’t much space.“
