Kyrie Irving planned to seek the highest possible salary this offseason

Kyrie Irving

Kyrie Irving is not only one of the top players in the league but also one of the most gifted scorers in basketball history. After he demanded a trade from the Brooklyn Nets, he was acquired by the Dallas Mavericks. The deal also provided them with an alternate shot maker besides Luka Doncic, which the team was badly missing. Irving has signed a contract with the Mavericks, but he would try to sign a max contract with teams he might have targeted. Earlier, the Nets didn’t give the star a max extension, which might have forced him to leave the team.

According to recent reports, after the season ends, at the right-time Kyrie is targeting a max contract signing, however, it was also made clear that Dallas would be his top preference, based on the current salary cap, devised by the league, which is projected to be $134 million over five years. However, Dallas can pay the NBA champion a total of $272 million over five years.

Despite everything, the question remains the same, which has been a concern for every team before signing the superstar. Would he be available after signing the extension? While signing Kyrie gives one more asset to lure Doncic into signing an extension again, after the 2026-27 season, the questions surrounding his availability are still something that teams have no idea about. In the last few years, Uncle Drew has not only been unavailable for his team, sometimes for personal reasons, sometimes with injuries, but he has also attracted a lot of non-basketball controversies. So far, if any of the teams in the league signs him, they have to take unavailability into consideration.

Can Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving pair work in the postseason

For any NBA pundit or fan, Doncic and Irving are two of the top offensive players in the league. However, not just the offense, there is something more that puts them together in one category; their not-so-good defense. As the regular season comes to an end, teams tend to restructure their game and especially their defense.

Irving and Doncic are statistically bad on the defensive end. Luka is comparatively slower and it becomes easy for the offensive player to beat him. Irving likes to play most of his game in the paint area, which might cause him to be a defensive liability.

Other players like Christian Wood who are good offensively are also a defensive liability to the team.
