According to Shams Charania, Kyrie Irving has agreed to a three-year, $126 million contract to return to the Dallas Mavericks, with a player option in the third season. This puts to rest all kinds of rumors linking him to other teams.

Irving re-signing with the Mavericks is a huge sigh of relief for fans who can now look forward to watching him and Luka Doncic build on their chemistry and hopefully take the Mavs deep into the postseason next year. The priority for the Mavericks would now be to get a solid role player to complement their two superstars. A major challenge that Dallas faces is to do with their defense. The Mavericks gave up the heart and soul of their defense when they traded away Dorian Finney-Smith to the Brooklyn Nets as a part of the deal to acquire Irving.

Another solid role player the Mavs gave up while acquiring Irving was Spencer Dinwiddie, who provided great scoring off the bench. However, the Mavs are now keen to make amends and set things right for the upcoming season. Re-signing Irving is the second step in that direction. The first was selecting Duke freshman Dereck Lively II at No. 12 and Marquette junior Olivier-Maxence Prosper at No. 24 in the 2023 NBA draft, both of whom should help the Mavericks in a big way.

Another challenge that the Mavericks could face this season would be Irving’s struggles with injuries. He has played in only 163 games out of 308 regular season games in the last 4 years. Not only that, but Irving also left his previous teams for unexplained ‘personal reasons’, refused to take the Covid vaccine, and promoted a film filled with anti-semitism leading to an 8-game suspension.

Irving can be a difficult player to handle, but if he can get his act together this season, it will only benefit the Mavericks in a big way.
