One of the most notable trades of the recently concluded trade deadline was Brooklyn Nets Star Kyrie Irving to the Dallas Mavericks. It came after repeated trade requests from Irving. The ‘Ankletaker’ signed with the Nets in 2019 and has had a back-and-forth run with them. It involved a lot of absurd suspensions and relatively less game time.

Reacting to the increased trade requests from NBA players in general, former MVP Charles Barkley called them out and said, “You can’t treat these owners and fans like crap.” Irving broke his silence and in response to the above statement, said, “When did it become terrible to make great business decisions for yourself, your happiness & your peace of mind? Not every employer you’re going to get along with,” as per Ben Golliver.

The Brooklyn Nets were once considered championship favourites with the likes of 2x Finals MVP Kevin Durant and former MVP James Harden alongside Irving on their Roster. Now they are a young team with none of the aforementioned stars remaining, with Durant and Harden being dealt away to the Phoenix Suns and Philadelphia 76ers respectively. The Nets are currently placed 5th in the Eastern Conference.

Kyrie Irving has started afresh with the Western Conference team Dallas Mavericks. He made his debut for the Mavericks against the LA Clippers and recorded 24 points in the Mavs’ 6-point victory against the Clippers. Irving and Doncic played together for the first time vs the Sacramento Kings on 11th February. The game turned out to be an OT thriller with the Kings edging past the Mavericks by 5 points. Irving and Doncic recorded 28 and 27 points respectively.

The following game saw an interesting turn of events as the duo exchanged possessions multiple times in the clutch minutes against the Minnesota Timberwolves which eventually resulted in a 3-point loss. The Mavericks also lost their last game prior to the All-Star Break to the Denver Nuggets.

With a lot of speculation surrounding the chemistry between the 2 stars, Irving has rubbished the same, stating that he doesn’t think of it to be a big deal and believes he can play equally well off the ball. Irving and Doncic will be in action during the All-Star Game scheduled to happen on 19th February. Both the players will be starting the game for either team LeBron or team Giannis.
