The Los Angeles Lakers are already setting their sights on the upcoming offseason, looking to bolster their roster and make a strong push for another championship run. According to NBA insider Brian Windhorst, the Lakers may be targeting Dallas Mavericks’ impending free agent Kyrie Irving as a potential addition to their lineup.
Speaking on “The Hoop Collective” podcast, Windhorst mentioned that acquiring Irving would require some manoeuvring, with the star point guard potentially having to waive the max contract or the Lakers working out a deal with the Mavericks. However, he believes that the Lakers have the flexibility to retain promising young talent Austin Reaves while bringing in Irving.
The Lakers’ current season hangs in the balance, facing a daunting 3-0 series deficit. While their championship aspirations this year may be coming to an unfortunate end, the team has already exceeded expectations, making it to the Western Conference Finals despite a shaky start to the 2022-23 campaign.
With LeBron James reaching the age of 38, the Lakers’ front office is keenly aware that their championship window may be closing. As a result, they are actively exploring options to enhance their roster during the offseason. Adding Kyrie Irving to the mix would undoubtedly strengthen the team’s offense, capitalizing on his exceptional shot-creation skills.
Lakers eager to Retain Austin Reaves
The Los Angeles Lakers are focused on probable free agent Kyrie Irving, but they also want to keep young guard Austin Reaves as an integral part of their team. In addition to LeBron James and Anthony Davis, the Lakers’ turnaround this season has been greatly aided by the second-year undrafted player.
Reaves, a star player for the University of Oklahoma, has improved a lot this regular season, averaging 13.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game. Starting a game increased his contribution to 15.1 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per match, making his effect even more apparent.
The 23-year-old’s value has only grown during the playoffs, where he presently holds the third-highest scoring position for the Lakers, behind only James and Davis. Reaves is a valuable asset for any team because of his ability to contribute on both sides of the floor and his consistent scoring output.
Reaves’ potential is acknowledged by other teams besides the Lakers, though. According to insider rumours, at least one other team is anticipated to pursue him aggressively in free agency, maybe outbidding the Lakers for his services. Reaves’s market worth is anticipated to increase once he reaches the open market, boosting the rivalry for his signature.
