Kyrie Irving and LeBron James are long-time friends/teammates/brothers who played together for the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2014-2017. The duo led the Cavaliers to their only Championship victory in 2016 while reaching the finals in the remaining seasons. The chemistry was a sight to behold as both superstars annihilated opponents on a nightly basis. This chemistry has led fans to believe various speculations. One is that James and Irving will reunite at the Los Angeles Lakers.
Kyrie Irving’s contract with the Dallas Mavericks is coming to an end this summer, and for fans, LA could be a likely destination for the player. With Irving being in attendance for the Lakers’ Game 6 victory against the Memphis Grizzlies, speculations went up. The Lakers ended the game with a 40-point blowout victory, taking them to Round 2 of the playoffs. In the conference Semi-Finals, the Lakers will face off against the Golden State Warriors.
Though for Kyrie Irving, wearing purple and gold next season seems quite unlikely. Reports suggest that the LA Lakers aren’t interested in signing Irving to the squad despite the chemistry with LeBron James. There are many reasons, including Irving’s age and the salary cap for the Lakers; therefore, the team doesn’t seem interested. Per reports, the Lakers are content with their squad despite their attempts to strengthen the backcourt.
Tim Cato from The Athletic made it clear that the Lakers won’t sign the NBA Vet. Cato said, “…no matter how close Irving might be to [LeBron] James, the Lakers are disinterested in pursuing him in free agency, say league sources…”
Kyrie Irving and the fans’ desire to pair him with LeBron James at the Lakers
Fans across the world have made it evident that they want to see the duo play together at the Lakers. It isn’t just the fans but also a former teammate of the pair, Tristan Thompson. Thompson had once expressed his opinion that Irving and James would play together again at some point in the future. Though, Tim Cato doesn’t seem to agree with any of this. Cato said, “To acquire him would require jettisoning several deadline acquisitions who have helped revitalize their season and land them in a second-round series against the Golden State Warriors.”
Irving’s age and his injury-ridden career are being deemed as the reason for the Lakers’ disinterest in him. Irving turned 31 in March, already having a career marred with injuries that resulted in his absence for prolonged durations.
Alongside the injuries, Irving’s career doesn’t lack controversies as well. After Russell Westbrook’s controversial exit from the team, the team wouldn’t want any drama associated with it. Nevertheless, the Lakers now have to focus on the Conference Semi-Finals against the Golden State Warriors. It all begins tomorrow.
