The Los Angeles Lakers had a disappointing start to the season but managed to reach the Western Conference Finals last season after acquiring key players like Rui Hachimura, D’Angelo Russell, and Jared Vanderbilt at the trade deadline. They reached that stage by defeating the No. 2 seeded Memphis Grizzlies and the 2022 NBA Champions, the Golden State Warriors. However, they ultimately lost a highly competitive 4-game series to the eventual champions, the Denver Nuggets.
Recently, Lakers Head Coach Darvin Ham appeared on an episode of SiriusXM NBA Radio, where he discussed his relationship with Lakers GM Rob Pelinka and the team’s progress. Ham expressed his optimism for the upcoming season, stating that Lakers fans should prepare themselves for better results.
He said, “We want the fire at our feet. We want the opportunity to go to a higher level. He (Rob Pelinka) and I have a great partnership. He’s been great. A lot that we’ve gotten done is just been he and I, and it’s eerily like just similar the way we think. Laker nation – get ready to put your seat belt on. It only gets better from here.”
The Lakers recently re-signed key rotation players like Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura, and D’Angelo Russell this offseason. The team also made valuable additions, including Gabe Vincent, Jaxson Hayes, Cam Reddish and Taurean Prince. These key role players were added to build around LeBron James and Anthony Davis, as Darvin Ham has previously mentioned that they are aiming for the championship.
This year might be their last chance with LeBron and AD, as both of them are in the last year of their contracts with a player option a year later. However, it is likely that they will decline the option, as LeBron has expressed his desire to play with Bronny, and AD is looking for a long-term contract to secure his future in the league.
Darvin Ham slams teams who didn’t hire him as Head Coach
Ham’s decision-making skills and effective game plans, combined with outstanding performances by the team, played a significant role in the Lakers’ journey to the Western Conference Finals. During an appearance on #thisleague UNCUT with Marc Stein and Chris B Haynes, Ham had a message for the ten teams that did not hire him as their coach.
He expressed his belief that those teams made a grave mistake, stating, “Yeah, they f—– up royally. You go back and look at those teams, how many coaches changes have we had amongst those teams?” Ham specifically mentioned the Atlanta Hawks, who fired Coach Nate McMillan and hired Quin Snyder. Despite being the 8th seed in the Eastern Conference last season, the Hawks failed to advance past the first round.
While other franchises missed out on the opportunity to hire Ham, the Lakers benefited from their losses. Although Ham faced some challenges in his rookie season as Head Coach, he has proven himself to be one of the league’s best coaches. With a talented roster ready to make another championship run, it will be intriguing to see if he can secure his first NBA Championship as the Lakers’ Head Coach.
