In the build-up to the 2023 NBA Draft lottery basketball fans and analysts were excited about the possibility of Victor Wembanyama, the 7 foot 4 wonder who can change the way people play basketball. Wembanyama had many choices for his future basketball career since he was considered one of the best prospects for over 10 years, and out of all of these possibilities, the most suitable option was the San Antonio Spurs.

Greg Popovich, an iconic leader and arguably the best coach in NBA coaching history, has spearheaded the production of exceptional big men for the Spurs. In the past, he helped in the development of first overall picks, David Robinson and Tim Duncan who were some of the biggest names in the sport. Obviously, it was quite pleasing that Wembanyama’s maturity would take place with Popovich as a teacher. Even the arguably greatest point guard of all time, Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson, agrees with the notion that Wembanyama, found himself in the best-case scenario by landing with Popovich and the Spurs.

During an interview with SiriusXM NBA Radio, Johnson stated:

Wembanyama landed at the right place because Popovich has already developed Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, guys who are international players, and he knows what to do with those types of guys.

This was a clear endorsement of Popovich’s ability to cultivate foreign talent, which is encouraging for Wembanyama’s progress.

Magic Johnson revealed he is eager for what Wembanyama can bring. he expressed great surprise at the prospect’s remarkably tall stature, high basketball IQ, agility, and skilful handling of the ball. The young man’s ability was so impressive to him, that he could not help saying: 

What is he? He is 7’3, 7’4 years old and big? Handle the ball as if he is a six footer?” He can run faster than a deer on the floor just like that deer. And is he really so freakingly tall?
