Larry Bird
Former NBA superstar Larry Bird recently shared an amazing story of how his father walked from their home to watch him break a record in high school. Larry Bird was born to Joe and Georgia Bird in Indiana. His father was a veteran of the Korean War who couldn’t provide Bird and his siblings with a luxurious lifestyle so they had a very poor upbringing.
Dan Shaughnessy of the Boston Globe revealed that Larry Bird shared with him a story of how his dad walked miles to see his son break a county record. Larry narrated, “There was one night when I had a helluva game going. I had 30-something points in the first half and people were thinking I was going to break the Orange County record. My dad was at home. He didn’t go to many games. Well, my uncle called him at halftime and said, ‘You’d better get down here. Your boy is going to do it tonight.’ We didn’t have no car, but he walked over. I ended up with 54 points and 38 rebounds.”
Larry’s father Joe might have been very happy watching his son break a record. It is one of those moments that surely becomes the highlight of any parent’s life. On the other hand, it was a moment of lifetime for Larry as well. Joe wasn’t already at the game and he walked all the way to see his son play is interesting. Every parent at some point of time dreams of seeing their child become the next greatest player in whatever sport they love of whatever field they choose. Parents always want the best for their children and there’s no doubt that Larry made his parents super proud.
