Kyle Kuzma is officially a free agent. The former Los Angeles Lakers forward, who was traded to the Washington Wizards, declined his $13 million player option for the 2023-24 season on Tuesday, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
“ESPN Sources: As expected, Washington Wizards forward Kyle Kuzma has declined his $13 million player option and become a free agent. Kuzma will be one of the marketplace’s most prominent players. A return to Washington on a new deal remains a possibility,” tweeted Wojnarowski.
After a breakout season with the Wizards, Kuzma is ready to prove himself as a star in the NBA. The 27-year-old forward posted 21.2 points and 7.2 rebounds per game, while also shooting efficiently from the field (44.8%) and beyond the arc (33.3%). He was a key contributor on both ends of the floor for the young Washington team.
Kuzma knows what it takes to win at the highest level, as he was part of the Lakers’ championship squad in 2020 alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis. However, he also faced a lot of scrutiny and pressure in LA, where his role and performance fluctuated over his four seasons. He was traded to the Wizards this summer in a blockbuster deal that sent Russell Westbrook to the Lakers, along with Montrezl Harrell, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and a first-round pick.
NBA Fans on Twitter petition for Kyle Kuzma to return to Lakers
That situation could be back in LA, according to some NBA fans on Twitter who want to see Kuzma return to the Lakers as an elite role player. Here are some of the tweets from NBA fans who are hoping for a Kuzma-Lakers reunion:
Despite leaving the Lakers, Kuzma has maintained a good rapport with James and Davis, who have praised him for his growth and maturity as a player. Kuzma has also expressed his interest in returning to Washington, where he said he had a great time and developed his game significantly.
“It’s 100 percent an option. … I’ve had a great time here,” Kuzma said. “I’ve developed my game significantly here, and there’s good people here. I’d be a fool to say it’s not an option for me.”
However, money is not his main motivation for his next contract, he said. Instead, he is looking for a situation where he can be the best version of himself, help lead a team, make other players better and light up rooms. Regardless of where Kuzma ends up, one thing is certain: he will be a valuable addition to any team.
