Gilbert Arenas has a hot take on LeBron James‘ son Bronny James. Gilbert Arenas was speaking with former player Kenyon Martin Sr. and journalist Bomani Jones on his show Gil’s Arena. According to the former superstar point guard, Bronny James is not playing at his best every night.
Arenas coached James Jr. when he was in the 8th grade. Back then during a one-on-one matchup something Arenas said triggered the ‘Tiger’ in him. Arenas had a comparison up his sleeve for James Jr. He said:
He's a Jrue Holiday, just more athletic..... He has the Bugatti engine but wants to drive the speed limit. He doesn't want to take it.Gilbert Arenas said
When Jones alluded that Bronny James is probably not ready for the NBA yet, Kenyon Martin said he has all the tools, just maybe slightly short for the NBA. Arenas at this point added that if Bronny can develop a mentality like Russell Westbrook who wants to go all in on every possession, it would make him unbeatable.
During the discussion, they showed a clip of LeBron James focused on Bronny’s game while talking to the reporters. Arenas caught James Sr. calling every time Bronny had the ball to shoot it. Arenas says, even James Sr. can see that Bronny did not want to take the shot. Rather he was passing the ball. Father James was clearly frustrated that Bronny did not take shots.
Arenas added that if his father with one of the best IQs in basketball can see the shot appearing and his son is hesitant, that speaks a lot. The panel agreed that Bronny needs to develop that mindset more to be able to be successful. In the NBA, it takes more than just skill to succeed.
Bronny James and a less-than-ideal college debut season
Bronny James was supposed to be top-10 draft prospect before the college season started. With a cardiac arrest and more importantly lacklustre play from the Freshman, James Jr. has off late tumbled down draft boards. What is more surprising is that his fellow Freshman teammate and guard Isaiah Collier is still considered a top-5 pick. Collier has averaged 15.4 points, 2.6 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game. James Jr. is averaging a paltry 5.9 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists.
With this level of underwhelming play, Arenas and the others on the show were not sure if Bronny James could survive for long in the NBA. LeBron James may retire after playing one season with his son. He might not have leverage to help Bronny stay on the team with this level of play.
Hence, Arenas wants Bronny to shift gears and play at a higher level. Arenas wants Bronny to use his Bugatti engine all the time to make a place for himself.
