The Los Angeles Lakers did the unthinkable on Friday night. They beat the Golden State Warriors 122-101 in Game 6 of their second-round series at Crypto.com Arena, sending the defending champions home and advancing to the Western Conference finals.
The Lakers, who barely made the playoffs as the seventh seed and had a dismal 2-10 start to the season, played with a sense of urgency and confidence that the Warriors could not match. They led from wire to wire, never letting the Warriors get within single digits in the second half.
LeBron James was sensational, scoring 30 points and flirting with a triple-double with nine rebounds and nine assists. He also got plenty of help from his teammates, especially Austin Reaves, who had a breakout game with 23 points and hit a half-court shot to end the first half.
The Warriors, on the other hand, looked out of sync and frustrated. They shot poorly from the field and from beyond the arc, missing open shots and forcing tough ones. Stephen Curry was the only Warrior who showed up, scoring 32 points and trying to keep his team alive. But he got no support from his co-star Klay Thompson, who had another nightmarish game with eight points on 3-of-19 shooting.
Anthony Davis, who bounced back from a head injury that sidelined him in Game 5 and had to be wheeled out. Davis was dominant in the paint, scoring 17 points and grabbing 20 rebounds. He also anchored the Lakers’ defense, which held the Warriors to their lowest point total of the series.
