LeBron James and Bill Russell
Bill Russell the greatest winner that sports has ever known unfortunately died at the age of 88 on 31 July 2022. It really is a big loss for the world of sports and especially the basketball community as we lost a legend of the game. He never limited himself to the basketball court and got the job done off the court too. He was an important part of African-American society as he really was much more than an athlete. He was also known for being a powerful civil leader, who actually brought in changes and paved the way for others. He has really achieved many unthinkable greats back in the days. Bill Russell was an All-Time winner and also one of the most influential guys out there. So remembering and respecting him and his greats, NBA has made some historic decisions but LeBron James being King James is Grandfathered from those.

The league recently, decided to retire Bill Russell’s No. 6 jersey throughout the NBA so that his career can be recognized. His greatness and legacy both on court and off the court from winning 11 NBA Finals with multiple records to receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom deserves some historic and unique honors and that’s exactly what the league did by retiring his jersey. But LeBron James and some other players who are currently wearing #6 will be grandfathered and no more No. 6 jerseys will ever be issued.
In addition to retiring Bill Russell’s No. 6 jersey, NBA has also decided to honor the Boston Celtics legend throughout the 2022-23 season. As next season players will be wearing a commemorative patch on the right shoulder of their jerseys. Also, each court across the league will display a clover-shaped logo with the No. 6 near the scorer’s table on the sideline. LeBron James though still has an option to switch his jersey number and go back to his favorite number.

Can LeBron James go back to No. 23 as NBA retired Bill Russell’s No.6 jersey across the league?

LeBron James can still shift back to his #23 jersey which he switched to #6 so Anthony Davis can wear the MJ number. But AD is still riding with his No. 3 jersey. So Bron has an option of switching it back again as the league has announced to retire Bill Russell’s No. 6 jersey throughout the league. Or maybe King will continue wearing the legendary number and honor Mr. 11 Rings by adding more of his greats to the number. As both of them are some of the best players to touch a basketball ever and also members of the G.O.A.T conversation.
