“He is NO messiah,” Nike’s LeBron James tribute ad for breaking all-time NBA points record gets tremendous hate for using religious language

Fans on Twitter took an exception to the religious mix in the tribute video that Nike released after LeBron James broke Kareem's record to become NBA's All-time scoring leader.

LeBron James finally became the NBA’s all-time scoring leader, breaking Kareem Abdul Jabbar’s record that was intact for almost 40 years. To celebrate the major feat of its global ambassador, Nike decided to drop a video dedicated to James’ two decades of greatness. The shoes and apparel brand released a video that highlighted the best moments in images and videos from the Los Angeles Lakers star’s career. However, the inclusion of a religious vibe in the video did not sit well with the fans.

After watching and listening to the video, many fans on Twitter noticed and pointed out that the brand had tried to pose James better and, more importantly, greater than anybody else. The video apparently had spiritual language, the Gospel choir, that potrays James above everyone else.

The 19-time NBA All-Star needed 36 points to beat Kareem’s record of 38,387. James broke the record with 38 points in a game between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Oklahoma City Thunder. He is now alone atop the mountain of nearly insurmountable points. He has several years left in his career, and it is very feasible that he may add a few thousand points more to his career total, which will be nearly impossible to break.

While Nike dropped the video in tribute to the superstar, there is no deniability that it was one of the most beautiful videos for a tribute to any player. Many fans on Twitter dropped praise for the video, but many alleged that it was way too much. Reacting to the video, one of the fans wrote, “He is no messiah.” While calling Nike a hypocrite, another fan wrote, “@nike you owe the Christian community an apology. This is beyond insulting. And you dropped @KyrieIrving for insulting a religious community?? Hypocrites.” Here are some more reactions;

While the music and the songs in the video sounded like a sermon to God himself, the vocalist for the song, Alonzo Chadwick, took to Twitter to clarify that it was newly recorded. “No, it was recorded for the commercial,” he wrote on Twitter. Despite a little backlash on Twitter, there is no deniability in the fact that Ohio born has achieved an impossible feat, which very few thought could be broken. He is still going strong at age 38, which in itself is a miracle.
