LeBron James is not ready to count out the Los Angeles Lakers just yet, even after dropping the first two games of the Western Conference finals to the Denver Nuggets. The Lakers superstar, who flirted with a triple-double with 22 points, nine rebounds and ten assists in a 108-103 defeat on Thursday night, believes his team can turn things around at home in Game 3.

We got better from game one to game two, and we have to do the same thing from game two to game three,” James said in his post-game media availability. “We have an opportunity to go back home and play some good basketball.

He also shrugged off any worries about his ankle injury, which he tweaked several times during Game 2. He said he would be ready for Game 3 and that “I’ll be fine.

James, however, had some really rough moments on the court, such as missing an easy dunk on a breakaway and blowing a wide-open layup. He also came up short in the clutch, scoring only four points in the final period and going 0-for-6 from beyond the arc in the game.

Lakers need more from LeBron James and Anthony Davis

James was left to carry the Lakers by himself, but he couldn’t do it alone. Austin Reaves was the only other Laker who showed up, hitting five clutch 3-pointers and scoring 22 points. Rui Hachimura gave the Lakers a boost with 21 points off the bench. But Anthony Davis, who was supposed to be James’ partner in crime, had a night to forget with just 18 points on a woeful 4-of-15 shooting.

Davis, who averaged 22.8 points and 10.5 rebounds in the previous round against the Golden State Warriors, was outclassed by Nuggets star Nikola Jokic, who had 23 points, 17 rebounds, and 12 assists in Game 2. Davis also had trouble defending Jokic, who scored at will in the paint and drew fouls.

The Lakers are in trouble, down 0-2 in the series and heading back to Crypto.com Arena for Game 3 on Saturday. They need James and Davis to step up and lead the way if they want to have any chance of slowing down the surging Nuggets.
