Julius Erving, Kyrie Irving

Legendary NBA player Julius Erving, also known as “Dr. J.,” is rarely heard speaking forth, but he recently did so in response to Brooklyn Nets player Kyrie Irving’s public criticism for tweeting a link to a disputed antisemitic movie. Erving is confident that Kyrie will return to the NBA soon despite a general manager’s anonymous assessment that his career may be finished.

Last week, Kyrie Irving endorsed a film on social media that featured offensive antisemitic content. Since then, Irving has hesitated against apologizing or expressing regret for the movie’s message, only doing so when it was already too late. Irving’s future with Brooklyn is now in doubt, though, as he is now out on suspension from the team and must follow a few procedures to be allowed to play again. Julius Erving, a Hall of Famer, opposes and thinks he still has a future in the league.

Erving believes there are too many people in the NBA to allow Irving’s career to collapse, according to a TMZ Sports interview when he was asked about the Nets star’s career. He stated: “The owners are greedy, so he’s going to end up in the league playing for somebody, no matter how toxic he is. When he’s too old to play, he’ll be done. As long as he’s young enough to score those buckets, and do what he does, be Kyrie, he’s going to have a job.” Kyrie is one of the league’s most gifted and skilled players and is a seven-time All-Star.

Kyrie Irving’s latest controversy regarding antisemitism

By sharing a link to the 2018 antisemitic documentary “Hebrews to Negroes: Wake Up Black America” on Twitter and Instagram, Kyrie Irving became capable of putting together his despicable behavior from last Friday. The movie is based on a book of the same name and seemed to be uncomfortable, as well as some people have accused the book and movie for having an antisemitic undertone. In addition to the press release that followed, the NBA and Irving’s sponsor Nike (who split with the guard) both made statements condemning antisemitism and hate speech.

Kyrie Irving and ESPN’s Nick Friedell were involved in a dispute after posting the movie’s link, in which Friedell had questioned Irving about the idea of sponsoring the film. Irving and the Nets pledged to provide $500,000 to institutions and causes that work to combat discrimination and racism in society. The Anti-Defamation League and the team also issued a joint statement last week in reaction to the controversy. Both NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and Nets owner Joe Tsai were also troubled by the fact that Irving had not conveyed an apology.

Erving seemed to feel throughout the interview that Kyrie should treat the NBA player position with more respect than he currently does. He stated: “I always thought it was a privilege, an honor, and a blessing to be able to be an NBA player, So, if he could respect that a little bit more, I’d be happy with him sharing my name.” Kyrie’s future with the Nets organization and the league is uncertain at this time, and it’s difficult to anticipate what could potentially save his career.

The future of Irving in the league is not viewed by everyone as being as bright. His team is out of time, and only time will determine how and where his career will end. Kyrie and NBA Commissioner Adam Silver had a meeting this Tuesday, and it seems like the solution to the problems was really constructive. Given that he will be a free agent after the current season and given how troublesome he has been lately, there are certainly at least a few teams who would sign him if they had the chance.
