“Once in a lifetime talent” Liberty star Sabrina Ionesco registers a triple-double record never seen in WNBA history
Sabrina Ionesco a triple double queen
The Steph Curry of WNBA, Sabrina Ionesco has once again fetched all highlights. New York Liberty is trying to catch up with the Eastern Conference leaders and they are heavily dependent on their star guard Sabrina. It was yet another month, another triple-double for New superstar Sabrina Ionescu, as she powered her team to stop the losing streak. 24-years old Ionescu ended up with 31 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists. This was her 3rd triple-double in her career and became the first to ever have a 30-point triple-double in the WNBA, which speaks volumes of how difficult it is to achieve such a record.
Ionescu made history earlier in June, as just the fourth WNBA player ever with multiple triple-doubles. Sabrina Ionescu is making it all count and had her second triple-double in quick succession.
And with the way she’s playing, there is no question about whether we will get to witness more from her. What is more interesting is that the 24-year-old is just in the third season of her career after going to the Liberty at no. 1 overall in 2020. She always had been a star with all-around gameplay.
WNBA Fans go crazy after Sabrina Ionescu puts up a show of high quality in a Record-setting game
New York Liberty is struggling in the league. They currently stand 5th in the East with a 9-12 record in the 2022 season. But the team just found a great player in the 2022 draft as they selected Sabrina as the 1st overall pick after she had set an NCAA record with 26 triple-doubles at Oregon.
Sabrina is leading the team with 17 points average. She is also the leader in assists and rebounds recording 8 and 7 per game respectively. He is posting career averages of 13.9 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 6.1 assists. The Liberty has been up-and-down despite her production, but with Ionescu developing into a real superstar, the team could very well turn things around sooner or later.
In Sabrina’s case, she had her 3rd career triple-double tying her with the Chicago Sky’s Candace Parker for the most in a WNBA career. Ionescu also broke the mark of 29 points set by Los Angeles Sparks center Lisa Leslie in 2004 to become the first WNBA player to score at least 30 points in a triple-double game.
As for the game, it was an offensive tour-de-force by both teams. Both teams combined point total of 223, setting a new WNBA record for a regulation game. The teams also set a league mark for combined 3-pointers in a game (31), while New York’s 18 treys tied a league record, as did the Liberty’s 35 assists.
And after losing the game with 106 points on the board, the Aces became the first team to surrender in a loss in franchise history by the Aces. Keeping up with records, it was the perfect performance by Sabrina as she had 0 turnovers in the game and became the first WNBA player to register a triple-double without a turnover. This great performance was matched only by Nikola Jokic in NBA, as per ESPN stats.
California-born star said, “I was just really trying to take care of the ball, I thought that was really important, As a point guard and the primary ball handler, just wanting to continue to work on that part of the game. I’m just trying to be the best that I can every time I step out on the floor. It’s me versus me. I’m trying to get better and continue to learn from all the situations that I’ve been put in.”
Here is how fans reacted to her performance,
