Luka Doncic once triggered by Grant Williams’ trash talk went beast mode in training
Safe to say, Luka 'Magic' is un-guardable in scrimmages
Luka Doncic is currently leading the league in scoring, putting up numbers that haven’t been seen in the last few years. Doncic and the Mavs have been playing quite well, looking to make a better run as the postseason is around the corner. The Dallas gem has his way of competing. While Doncic seems like a star who is not as aggressive when it comes to showing who the best is, his stories tell otherwise.
Every great scorer has that one incident from practice that is told by either some coaching staff or a teammate. Surprisingly, Doncic is one of them. Dallas Mavericks’ assistant general manager and former NBA player, Michael Finley shared a story about Doncic dominating in a scrimmage.
Finley said on 105.3 The FAN:
He (Grant Williams) decided he wanted to get under Luka's skin. He thought that Luka didn't come that day to practice... They had a scrimmage going and he's talking trash to Luka up and down the court... I tell you, Luka went on a 26-6 run by himself. You can ask anybody, I'm not exaggerating... He showed everything, the three, the post-up, the floaters, everything, by himself. Everybody on the sideline, including the coach was like, 'Do not poke the bear'.Michael Finley said
This would remind fans of Micahel Jordan’s practice run with the Olympic team in 1992. Luka Doncic clearly didn’t let Williams’ trash talk get to him, responding with a 26-point outburst. Grant Williams is now playing for the Charlotte Hornets. He had his time with the Mavs, definitely a memorable one for him.
Luka Doncic is putting up MVP-like numbers
Luka Magic is averaging 34.3 points, 9.8 assists, and 9 assists while shooting over 49% from the field. The last time any player averaged more than 33 points per game was back in 2020 by James Harden, who put up 34.3 to end the season. What Luka has been doing is nothing short of greatness. Doncic gives glimpses of 22-year-old LeBron James, who led the Cavaliers to the Finals all by himself.
Playing alongside Kyrie Irving, who has been doing great ever since he joined the Mavs, Luka doesn’t lack confidence. With just a few games left in the season, Doncic is focused on getting Dallas out of the Play-In berth. It will be interesting to see how far Luka and Kyrie lead the Mavs in the coming postseason.
Dallas is set to face the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday, as they currently cruise with a four-game winning streak.
