Luka Doncic passes Russell Westbrook by scoring six consecutive 30-point triple-doubles.

The Dallas Mavericks guard Luka Dončić is having an amazing season in the league. The Slovenian player has unreal stats this year. In Saturday’s matchup against the Detroit Pistons, the Mavs won by 18 points, 142-124. In the win, Doncic scored a special 39-point triple-double with 10 rebounds and 10 assists.

This score marked Doncic’s sixth consecutive 30-point triple-double. Which is the new record in the NBA. Doncic made NBA history as he surpassed the Los Angeles Clippers’ Russell Westbrook, who previously had five straight 30-point triple-doubles in 2017. In that year, Westbrook won the Most Valuable Player award.

Doncic’s record is more impressive as this is only his sixth season in the league. The star is averaging 37.6 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 10.6 assists in the last five games. The player is marking his presence on both sides of the court. His performance from February resulted in him being the Western Conference player of the month. Consistently performing on such a high level is truly remarkable and one of a kind.

In the win against the Pistons, Kyrie Irving contributed with 21 points, and Tim Hardaway Jr and Daniel Gafford both scored 17 points each. But no player in the team came close to Doncic’s stat line, in all categories. The Mavs have been struggling the entire season. The team’s lack of support for Doncic’s scoring is the reason behind the team’s poor record.

Luka Donic is in the top 5 for winning the MVP this season

Doncic’s jaw-dropping performance throughout the season has resulted in him as the 5th player on the MVP ladder. Comparing his last six years as an NBA player, the guard is averaging the most points and most assists this season. The player is at his best from the field and the three-point line. Based on his career stats, Doncic is better in almost every department in the 2023-24 season.

Doncic is currently leading the league in most points this season with 34.7 per game. The player is almost averaging in triple-doubles with 9.0 rebounds and 9.8 assists with 49.7 FG%. Doncic’s incredible records have landed him a spot in the MVP ladder but the 25-year-old may not be able to get to the finish line this year.

Doncic’s performance kept aside, his team the Mavericks are struggling to reach the playoffs, as they are currently the 8th team in the Western Conference. If the Mavs fail to make it to the playoffs, the team’s status may affect Doncic’s eligibility for this year’s MVP award. Other players need to contribute to improve the team’s winning percentage.
