“Could’ve cracked his head open” Marcus Smart sounds off after Joel Embiid of the 76ers purposely tried to injure him

The Philadelphia 76ers were defeated 126-117 in the 2022-23 season opening. It wasn’t the performance they had hoped for, but they can live with it. They showed enough potential to merit the benefit of the doubt… for the time being.

The Sixers’ Road defeat to the Boston Celtics included all the drama you’d expect from a fierce East rivalry: needless fouls, shoving and fighting, and aggressive trash language. The most dramatic moment occurred at 11:41 of the third quarter when Joel Embiid and Marcus Smart were entangled beneath the basket. The final score was 126-117.

Embiid successfully retrieved the ball, but Marcus Smart continued to struggle for it, resulting in Embiid accidentally putting Smart in an arm bar and knocking him down. Smart then brutally grabbed Embiid’s ankle, causing the Big Fella to fall. Naturally, a scuffle occurred, and other players were engaged.

Things quickly deteriorated. Jaylen Brown grabbed Embiid and yanked him off the floor. A shocked Embiid appeared poised to pounce until James Harden came over to mediate. On his way to the bench, Brown stormed away, pointing an angry and accusing finger toward Embiid. Smart was called for a personal foul as well as a technical foul. After then, everything settled down.

New coach, a new season, and new players to contend with. The same dominant and explosive Celtics. The Celtics beat the 76ers 126-117 at TD Garden on Tuesday, resembling the club they were during their stunning comeback last season. Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown each scored 35 points, while Malcolm Brogdon added 16 points off the bench in his debut. Boston shot 56.1 percent from the field, outscored opponents 24-2, and only turned the ball over 10 times.

“We did a great job maintaining our poise,” said Joe Mazzulla, who earned his first win as a head coach. “We put ourselves in some difficult situations with some of the fouls. Some stuff didn’t go our way, but we didn’t overreact. We maintained our focus and execution.”

The Celtics went off to an early 9-2 lead, further energizing an already raucous crowd. In the first few minutes, Joel Embiid (26 points) bricked a shot, Tatum sunk a 3 and blew a kiss to the crowd, and everything was going Boston’s way.
