“Got to seperate reality from talk” Mark Cuban gets brutally honest on NBA stars like Kevin Durant making trade demands prior to 2022-23 season
Mark Cuban is not mad about Kevin Durant wanting a trade
Buckle up NBA fans, KD is on the move again ! Kevin Durant has reportedly asked for a trade outside Brooklyn and is being already slandered for betraying the Nets. The Brooklyn Nets had one of the most nightmarish seasons, with catastrophes on and off the court, as the Nets were swept off their feet by the Boston Celtics in the first round of playoffs, concluding their disappointing season and a disastrous postseason, far below preseason hopes and expectations, which has left KD to seek new challenges elsewhere. Recently, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban was asked about star players requesting trades and his answer was all about the buzz.
The Brooklyn Nets are tangled in their own webs, being laughed and trolled at for the atrocious season they went through. Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant have been at the fore of that disappointment and mockery, the star leaders of a club, that on paper could have reached The Finals.
Kevin Durant left the Golden State Warriors after 2 triumphant Rings in the NBA, looking to pair up with Kyrie Irving to have another chance at a Championship. He was a force to reckon with when he was with the Warriors, winning 2 Finals MVP’s while in San Francisco, being the spearhead along with Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. Unfortunately, his years at Brooklyn have been filled with disappointments, as he has not been able to grab even a conference Finals appearance.
“The team’s got the choice” – Mark Cuban speaks up on the recent fiasco surrounding Kevin Durant and the Nets
The Brooklyn Nets are tangled in their own webs, being laughed and trolled at for the atrocious season they went through. Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant have been at the fore of that disappointment and mockery, the star leaders of a club, that on paper could have reached The Finals. Kevin Durant’s decision to request a trade from Brooklyn comes as Kyrie Irving opted into his player option for $36.5 million next season with the Nets. These trade requests have been rather unpopular among the NBA Community, as people have slammed Durant for not being loyal, and for running away when the situation gets a little tough.
KD entering the first year of his $194 million contract with the Nets didn’t make him hesitate for once to put out a transfer request straight to the owner of the Brooklyn franchise and Kyrie’s op-in option surely played its part in this dramatic sequence of events. But that is the kind of leverage a player of his caliber can now have over the management as it is not the first time we are witnessing this. James Harden a few months back with the Nets.
Mark Cuban has been a really active owner for the Dallas Mavericks. The billionaire is usually spotted sitting with the coaching team at the front and is very animated during the game. The vocal philanthropist has voiced his beliefs about the Kevin Durant saga and the entire situation in general, about Players not being loyal to their organizations and joining super teams being a highly debated topic. According to Heavy Sports, Mark Cuban sees the landscape changing.
“I think it’s happening less. I think some of the old school guys are still in that mode but the younger guys. I can’t comment on a player but you see some of the younger guys signing extensions with no player options. You know what? You have to separate reality from talk, right? If a guy has three or four years left, the team has a choice.” Mark explained
So maybe a big change is on the horizon. However, as for the Superstar players who are still making trade requests like Kevin Durant, Mark Cuban feels that the team should have a say in any trade where the player has considerable time left on his contract. In Durant’s situation, the Nets have all the leverage since his contract will not run before 2026. The Mavs owner isn’t fretting about the current state of the league with stars jumping teams. In fact, he doesn’t seem to mind all the hype around these situations, saying “it’s a good thing” when people talk about the NBA.
After leaving Golden State for the Nets in 2019, Durant attempted to gather his own squad and try to lead a championship run of his own. Irving and Durant joined the Nets during the summer of 2019, it’s been an era of disappointment and untapped potential thus far. The Big 3 of the Nets, consisting of Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and James Harden played just 16 games together, making it hard to cash in fully on their names. Durant missed a quarter of this season due to a knee injury, Irving missed nearly two-thirds due to his refusal to get vaccinated, and Harden demanded a trade, one that brought back Ben Simmons, who still hasn’t played a game.
It’s certainly a triple-double of problems, problems and more problems for the Nets as they face plenty of questions financially and technically. From figuring out a way for the team to get over the lows and win a championship, the team also has to take care of the business side and make sure they can continuously support the franchise financially to keep competing in the future. As for KD, the future looks uncertain, as we look forward to how the story develops.
