Reports: Mexico City to be the next ‘super house’ as NBA tries to expand its business outside the United States
Marc J. Spears and NBA
The news of expanding the NBA has already been circulating in the league for the past few months. Recently NBA expanding its team in Mexico City has emerged as one of the possibilities. Seattle and Las Vegas have already been in the news for potentially having their own teams in the league. Seattle already had a team before it was broken in 2008. Las Vegas has its own WNBA team and NBA superstar LeBron James has said that he wants a team in Vegas.
Mark J. Spears joined NBA Today to talk about the potential expansion of the NBA in the coming years. Speaking with co-host Chiney Ogwumike, Spears said, “So, move to the side of Las Vegas. Move to the side of Seattle. Because Mexico City, which can also open a door to Latin America, is a legit contender when the NBA talks expansion.”
Spears also expounded on the fact that the size of the city is one of the crucial reasons that give Mexico City an edge. Spears further added, “This is five times bigger than New York. This would be the biggest market in the NBA if they join. From what I’m hearing, what Mark Tatum said, Mexico City is currently under consideration.”
NBA has currently not given any official statement on the plan for expansion but they have certainly kept the possibility open. Mark A. Tatum, Deputy Commissioner of the National Basketball Association previously spoke on the expansion plan of the league. Tatum said, “Expansion is currently not on the docket, but at some point if we were to turn to expansion, there’s no doubt that Mexico City would have to be one the cities that would be in consideration along with a host of other very big and relevant cities in North America.”
Mexico City and the NBA plan for expansion
Mexico City has its own G League team called Mexico City Capitanes and is in serious contention for a spot in the NBA teams. The NBA has already held 30 pre-season games and regular-season games in Mexico City. On December 17th the city is going to host the Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs. As Spears also said that Mexico city is one of the largest cities in the world and has a large population that would increase the viewerships for the league.
Expanding the league into Mexico City would give the league the 2nd team outside the US borders after Toronto Raptors. Alluding to the problems related to international expansion, Tatum said, “One of the biggest challenges around international expansion has always been the travel issues, the facility issues.” However, he also further added, “but there is a world-class facility in Mexico City in Arena CDMX … And so that’s not an issue.” The league already had so many players like Luka Doncic, Giannis, and Jokic coming into the league from across the continents.
