Michael Jordan

Michael Jordan is without a doubt one of the greatest basketball players ever to set a foot on the hardwood or hold the ball. He is also regarded as the G.O.A.T by many fans around especially the old heads. Mike wasn’t just a normal player in the league as his rivals feared him and had sleepless nights before their game against the Chicago Bulls. He wasn’t just an offensive god but also had a great defensive bag as he could lock up your favorite player anytime anywhere. Everybody wanted to be like Mike. But Michael Jordan didn’t have an easy road building that image of his as the media kept sabotaging him.

Michael Jordan has a very hard-to-match resume and there are reasons why he’s called Air, Black Jesus and MJ. He was a superstar in the league since his rookie season and always lived up to the expectations both on the court and off the court too. He was the face of the game as he brought life to it spreading it across the globe as a global superstar. Today he’s a Hall of Famer, is in the G.O.A.T conversation, a billionaire and a well-known sports personality. But still Michael Jordan back in the days when he was climbing the mountain today he’s on, got some shades of racism. As he was criticized without any solid reason even though he was trying to do the best he can while being the best he can.

During a 1992 interview of Michael Jordan with Playboy. He opened up about getting criticized by both black and white writers. The black writers also suggested that he isn’t black enough. But shutting them all down Black Jesus quoted: “I realize that I’m black, but I like to be viewed as a person, and that’s everybody’s wish. That’s what Martin Luther King fought for, that everybody could be treated equal and be viewed as a person. In some ways I can’t understand it, because here we are striving for equality and yet people are going to say I’m not black enough? At a time when actually I thought I was trying to be equal? I try to be a role model for black kids, white kids, yellow kids, green kids. This is what I felt was good about my personality. Don’t knock me off the pedestal that you wanted me to get onto. I get criticized about not giving back to the community—well, that’s not true. I do. I just don’t go out and try to seek publicity from it. I could hold a press conference on everything that I do for the black community. But I don’t choose to do that, so people are not aware of it.”

Further when he was questioned “Does the accusation sting?”, he replied: “Yeah, it’s really unfair. Because they ask for more black role models, yet they’re stabbing me when I’m up here trying to be a very positive black role model.” Michael Jordan has always been a role model for the younger generation and he continues to be one as his legacy can inspire anyone. But the media back in the days just tried to hold him down as he kept most of his off-court business private and still won everywhere. He did what could have been the best to do in the best possible manner. So if one still doubts him as a black role model or a good influencer and raises questions about his charities and donations then he’s just foolish.
