“This is why he is a Billionaire today!” Michael Jordan got bribed by Chicago Bulls with $33 Million

Michael Jordan
Michael Jordan is the greatest ever and there is no one that can deny that. With being the best on the court, there were certain privileges that came off the court. Like the brand deals and marketing on T.V, the fame that came alongside it and the dozens of endorsements that Jordan received over the years makes him one of the richest NBA players.

In the 1997-1998 season, things were alot different than they are today, The salary cap of teams were 26.9 million dollars. But the Bulls were paying their Marquee player 33.1 million dollars, this was possible because of the exception to the cap rule which was popular called “The Larry Bird Exception”. This was justified with the belief that star teams being loyal to a franchise is good for the fan base, for the league to market them and also for the TV broadcasting deals. It also encouraged star players to remain on their teams as they could pay more.
Michael Jordan, The First NBA Billionaire Player

Jordan is one of the best if not the best players to play basketball, with an undying legacy the only other player to have challenged his GOAT status is LeBron James. What MJ did for the NBA is important not just in terms of ratings or for profit but also historically. What basketball today as a global phenomenon is hugely credited to Michael Jordan’s era, specifically Jordan, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson for popularising the sport not just in America but the whole world.
In 2016, Jordan became the first NBA player to have become a billionaire. While during his career, Jordan earned about 90 million dollars, most of his income came from shoe deals with Nike, and later his own shoe brand Jordan, the beverage companies like Coca-Cola and Gatorade and starring in his own movie “Space Jam”. Today, Jordan sits on an estimated net worth of around $1.7 billion.
With the impact that Michael Jordan has had on the game and the league. Without him, the league would be nowhere near the cultural mecca that it is today. So there is a good argument possible that Jordan did deserve the salary that he got which was more than what teams were paying their entire roster.
