Michael Jordan is locking on his decision to sell his majority stakes in the Charlotte Hornets, finalizing a deal to end his 13-year-long tenure as the owner of the franchise.

Michael Jordan became the first former player in history to own majority stakes of a team in the NBA when he bought majority stakes of the Charlotte Hornets back in 2010. He paid $275 million for the team and his majority stake is now worth over $3 Billion, according to ESPN.

Jordan’s tenure as the team’s majority owner saw little success with the Hornets failing to win a playoff series and continuously ranking at the bottom of the NBA with the drafting of LaMelo ball being the only highlights of the Goat’s time with the Franchise. The timing of Jordan’s departure from Charlotte Hornets has left the organization in flux, with several looming key personnel decisions.

Jordan hasn’t disclosed the percentage of his stake that he would sell but he is expected to be a minority stakeholder and is reported to be still involved with the franchise as a minority stakeholder. It’s not clear how long the process of selling will take to be finalized by the NBA’s Board of Governors.

Other members of the new potential Hornets ownership group pending the approval are recording artist J. Cole, Dan Sundheim, Ian Loring and several other famous personalities.

NBA fans on Twitter were quick to bash the 6 times NBA Champion as his time as an owner was filled with ugly basketball and little success. Charlotte went 423-600 in his 13 seasons as the team’s majority owner, the 26th-best record over that span.

The Hornets have also missed the NBA Playoffs for the 7th straight year now and the team have never had any luck in the NBA Draft with the exception of LaMelo Ball.

Jordan was often criticized for not spending enough money on his team in free agency and for his decisions to not pay contracts of certain players like Kemba Walker back in 2019 who was their best player at that time and is currently the Hornet’s Franchise leading scorer.
