Charles Barkley, a former NBA star, has given credit to Michael Jordan for his business success. The two basketball legends were once close friends, but they haven’t spoken in over a decade. Despite this, Barkley has always been quick to acknowledge Jordan’s influence on his life, both on and off the court.
Speaking on his podcast, The Steam Room, Barkley revealed how Jordan’s advice had helped him add to his wealth. The former Phoenix Suns player shared a story about how the six-time NBA champion had advised him on his Nike deal. Barkley had signed the deal alongside Jordan in the early days of Nike’s business. At the time, Barkley was making around three million dollars a year from Nike.
Barkley explained how Jordan had advised him to negotiate his contract differently. “Why do you need all that money?” Jordan had asked him. “Tell Nike you want a million and you want the rest in stock options.” Barkley followed Jordan’s advice, and it proved to be a clever move. He said, “I actually probably made 10 times the amount of money because it split… I got those options at $35 and they split over a 100, probably ten times since 1984-85.”
Barkley’s story highlights the importance of good advice and mentorship in business. Despite their falling out, Barkley still acknowledges the impact that Jordan had on his career. Jordan’s business sense and advice helped Barkley make a fortune.
