As reports flood in, Monty Williams seems to have found a new home in the NBA. Williams was earlier fired as the Head Coach of the Phoenix Suns. This came after the Suns suffered a massive loss in the Western Conference Semi-Finals against the Denver Nuggets. The Suns suffered two consecutive 30-point blowouts in two consecutive Conference Semi-Finals. Following another failed campaign for the title, Phoenix and Williams parted ways.
Although after his departure, many suspected that he could potentially sign with the Milwaukee Bucks, Williams seemingly had other plans. Monty Williams reportedly received a six-year contract worth $78.5 million with the Detroit Pistons. This would make him the highest-paid head coach in NBA history. He will replace Dwane Casey, who stepped down after five seasons at the end of the 2022-23 campaign.
Monty Williams’ $78.5 million contract would get him close to $13 million dollars a year. This is a remarkable number for an NBA Head Coach. In contrast, the Phoenix Suns paid Williams $7 million, almost half of what he would receive in Detroit.
After the details of his contract were announced, fans on Twitter have gone into a frenzy. While some believe that this would be a good deal for both parties, some argue that the price is way too much for a Head Coach. Here are a few reactions:
