“Trade demands are a bad thing,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver weighs in on Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving’s exit from Nets
Adam Silver says that players demanding trades is a bad thing for the league and NBA is working hard to find a balance.

This trade deadline was one of the wildest in the history of the league. Players like Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant forced their way out of the Brooklyn Nets and onto other teams. NBA commissioner Adam Silver has finally addressed the subject of NBA players demanding trades. He stated unequivocally that such trade requests are detrimental to the teams and the league. Silver also stated that the league is working hard to find a solution.
During a conversation with Sage Steele during the All-Star weekend, the commissioner stated that the league supports the player movement. However, it also aims to ensure that similar incidents do not occur in the future by achieving the “right balance.” “You never want it to get to the point where a player’s literally demanding that he goes somewhere else,” Silver said. “And so, you know, again, something we’re discussing in collective bargaining. There aren’t, again, any simple fixes here or else we would’ve done it.”
Silver also mentioned that big trades this season have changed teams, and players have signed shorter contracts, which has enhanced player movement. He also stated that teams, not just players, tend to adjust their roster in a way that ultimately benefits the league. Such efforts, no matter what, strike a healthy balance. This year, the league saw 54 players switch teams, the highest in a single season since the league began tracking deadline activity in 1987.
Adam Silver says the league doesn’t publicize punishments for officials
The previous several weeks have witnessed a spate of questionable calls by officials, raising eyebrows around the league. Not only spectators, but even players, have complained that officials are not being penalised for poor mistakes made during vital game moments. In response to such issues and allegations, Adam Silver stated that disciplinary proceedings are taken against officials but are not made public.
“We don’t publicize discipline for officials. We don’t think that will be appropriate. But their assignments are affected by the quality of their calls, whether or not they progress into the playoffs and then round by round is impacted by the accuracy of their calls and their demeanor on the floor,” he said.
He further stated that, while it is not openly disclosed, there is a sufficient structure to manage the calls. However, he also stated that such issues are not new in the league. “So there is a system for overseeing and making those judgements about officials. But more to your earlier point about getting the calls right, that’s again not a new issue,” added Silver.
