Russell Westbrook is back in the NBA headlines and the reason is his future in the league again. Months ago, Brodie picked up his player option and secured the $47.1 million bag. But still, he’s on the radar and the Lakers have him active in the market with no satisfying deals at the moment. The organization is trying to ship him across the league since last season when they even scapegoated him. But thanks to Russell Westbrook’s mega contract, his season is alive in Los Angeles.
The Lakers’ front office has made the best efforts possible to part ways with Russell Westbrook even though everyone around knows he isn’t the right guy to blame. And, even owner Jeanie Buss recently backed up Mr. Triple-Double by calling him out as their best player last season. Honestly, the situation around Russell Westbrook is very confusing as the owner and new head coach Darvin Ham are riding with him. He is still on the market with many rumors around him.
Many fans and analysts also believe that the end of Russell Westbrook’s career is near. That will be when he’s traded to a team who has initiated rebuilding or is parting ways with its star players. And, then Brodie will have to agree to a buyout and pick up a role while coming off the bench and not starting games. Many have also made bold claims of him being out of the league in a season or two as not many teams are interested in having him on board.
But NBA Insider Ramona Shelburne recently added a totally different take to the story. She still believes in the greatness of Russell Westbrook unlike the rest of the media and all those hating mouths. According to her, Brodie won’t even consider the idea of getting bought out as it will it harm his reputation. Everyone knows, pride matters the most for him.
In a recent appearance on Zach Lowe’s podcast, “The Lowe Post” Ramona Shelburne, discussing the whole situation around Russell Westbrook was quoted: “Russell Westbrook is not a buyout guy. You have to agree to a buyout, and that’s not how he is wired. This is a guy who is very proud, and if you accept a buyout once in your career, you’re seen differently throughout the rest of your career.”
Further, Ramona Shelburne added: “Russ is Russ because of his swagger and the way he bleeds with it, the way he plays with it. You can’t retreat from that. You can’t let go of that because that’s what made Russ, Russ – it’s his swagger. If he accepts that, then he’s no longer Russell Westbrook.” Her view makes complete sense as once you agree for a buyout you don’t just lose the bag but also your reputation. In the past decade, there have been no such superstars who have made improvements or even got a chance to make some after agreeing to a buyout.

Can Russell Westbrook bounce back from the disrespect?
Fans out there are really forgetting how great Russell Westbrook is and why we tagged the former MVP as “Brodie” and “Mr. Triple-Double”. He can surely bounce back from the disrespect he is facing right now. He has the potential to lead the Los Angeles Lakers single-handedly as in the last season the system didn’t allow him to do that. This year, with some right addition and adjustments made to the roster if Brodie is given a bit more freedom and isn’t the primary guard of the team, then he really can destroy the whole league while suiting alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
For that to happen, the Los Angeles Lakers will have to trust him one last time and give him a fair chance instead of parting ways. Right now Russ is listed in the market. The teams in conversation to land him in a blockbuster trade which can really shock the world are Miami Heat and Utah Jazz. Except for those two teams, there are several other franchises who keep on coming and going but aren’t committed to risk it all for the veteran guard. Just one good season by Westbrook and he’ll be an All-Star in the league again who everyone wants on their team.
