“All Hell is going to be unleashed by Atlanta Hawks” NBA Twitter goes berserk as Dejounte Murray joins Trae Young at Hawks
Dejounte Murray
Atlanta Hawks played in the 2022 playoffs through play-in qualification. Conference finalists in the 2021 season didn’t make any huge upgrade in the team, making them vulnerable in the 2022 regular season. The bad form of their star Trae young and in general for the starting 5 players led them to the 8th spot finish. But the front office looked determined to get the job done this season as they made a huge upgrade in their roaster trading Dejounte Murray from San Antonio Spurs. This will provide an extra quality ball-handler who has performed better than most of the Hawks stars in previous seasons.
As per reports, the Spurs have reached an agreement to trade guard Dejounte Murray to the Hawks for a package that includes Danilo Gallinari and multiple first-round picks. San Antonio will have three first-rounder and a draft swap, as per Shams Charania of The Athletic. The Hawks are willing to trade 1st round picks shows their intent for the current season.
How trade for Dejounte Murray can help Trae Young and Atlanta Hawks for their title push?
Tony Ressler, Travis Schlenk, and Landry Fields were steadfast in their desire to upgrade the roster after contrasting two seasons. The front office did just what was required by trading for the first All-Star Trae Young will play with in his career. It was reported that the Knicks and Timberwolves were also showing a strong desire to get Murray to the big apple, but Hawk acted faster to seal the deal.
The deal can be seen as a major backcourt upgrade for the Hawks. Dejounte Murray is an All-Star – and one of the league’s best perimeter defenders – to complement All-NBA guard Trae Young. Interestingly Hawks had kept their core intact in the deal, with just Danilo Gallinari moving to other directions. Spurs are also in the rebuilding phase, so they were happy with the 1st round picks they received in the trade.
Murray’s ability and versatility on defense make him an ideal backcourt partner for Young, who is said to be “ecstatic” about the move. Murray is under contract for the next two seasons and is owed just over $34MM during that time.
25-years old star, Murray averaged 21.1 PPG, 9.2 APG, 8.3 RPG, and a league-leading 2.0 SPG last season. He was 46% from the field, while 3% from the range last season which could allow the team to play a spread offense. Spurs star enjoyed a breakout season in 2021/22 and was the runner-up for the Most Improved Player award.
Fans would be excited to see 50 points and 20 assist backcourt pairs which could be a dynamic duo for them. Bogdan Bogdanovic, Clint Capela, and DeAndre Hunter would also get benefited from the addition of a quality ball handler. But it is rumored that Hawks are still in the market shopping for John Collins.
