The Brooklyn Nets are having an OK season so far. Their goals of a playoff run are currently not going well with the Nets outside the play-in positions.
Naturally, they will look to make changes to either help in a playoff push or load up for the future. Therefore, it is not breaking news for the Nets to listen to offers for some of their players. One offer did come in, but the Nets rejecting it has caused head-slapping reactions from basketball fans.
The Nets are particularly looking at offers from teams for their 30-year-old stars. Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, and Royce O’Neale are attracting interest from playoff teams. All of them are taking home eight-figure salaries annually. Except for Finney-Smith, the others are on an expiring contract.
As per Brian Lewis of the New York Post, the Nets received an offer from an undisclosed team. The offer was for Finney-Smith in exchange for two first-round draft picks. The Nets rejected the offer.
Dorian Finney-Smith has been a role player throughout his career. The eight-season veteran has averaged double-digit only once in his career. He will be 31 when the upcoming season starts. Add to that he has a player option in the 2025-26 season. Such a contract will surely be the first to be traded for a team looking to add future draft picks.
The Nets do have some solid young building blocks in their building. But they need more stars to unlock the next level of play from the team. Creating cap space and getting hold of draft picks is the surefire way to achieve those goals. They seemed to have received both from the offer.
The Nets’ decisions are causing fans to go into a fit of rage
The Brooklyn Nets had lofty ambitions. The NBA Championship. Twice loading up with superstars to get to the goal. Only to fall flat in that race.
Now they have entrusted General Manager Sean Marks to go for a complete rebuild. But a rebuild will only be successful on the back of shrewd decisions. This decision does not look anything like a shrewd one.
Basketball fans could not wrap their heads around the news when it trickled in. They could not believe the Nets rejected a chance to get two first-round draft picks for an aging role player on a long contract. Check out their reactions below;
Letting go of older players with not-so-great production and a lengthy contract is without a doubt the priority of any rebuilding team. The Nets’ decision on one such player has baffled everyone.
