Kyrie Irving may potentially be wearing another uniform by the start of the next season. There are several seasons why the Brooklyn Nets will not continue with him and most of it relies around his availability. The former champion has been a concern in terms of availability over the last few years but his stint with the Nets has by far been the worst.
Brooklyn had a very tough regular season mostly because Irving was absent for the first half of it. He chose not to partake with his team because of the vaccination mandate which was eventually waived off allowing him to rejoin. However, by the time he returned, COVID-19 became the reason why other players were sidelined for a major part of the season. This led to the departure of James Harden which in return gave them the missing pieces they really needed.
Kevin Durant may not want Kyrie Irving to sign for another year
With respects to the Golden State Warriors winning their fourth title and their first since Kevin Durant left them may have a bitter taste in his mouth. Kyrie Irving signed a four year $136.4 Million contract with the Nets in 2019. This season was the final year until the contract came to an end which leaves the point guard open enter free agency or sign a player extension worth $36.9 Million through the 2022-23 season.
If he chooses to walk away from all the offers, he will enter free agency. Numerous teams have shown interest in him, most notably the LA Clippers, New York Knicks and LA Lakers. A move to the Lakers is highly possible considering that LeBron James and Irving had already played together on the championship winning team the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016. The Lakers’ season with Russell Westbrook was turbulent for the most part since they all lacked chemistry with him around.
Nick Friedell analyzes the Irving-Durant situation ahead of free agency
KD is a big part of the Nets roster and will have a piece of the decision to be taken on whether to continue with Kyrie Irving or not. Nick Friedell of ESPN told Sportcenter, “At every turn publicly, (Kevin Durant) has been there to support (Kyrie Irving), to say we need Kyrie, to say Kyrie can win a title with me here in Brooklyn. But I can tell you, I’ve been talking to people in the organization the last couple of weeks, when they finally sit down and talk to Kevin throughout the summer, they are trying to figure out if Kevin saw what everybody else saw.”
“The reason that whole season got sidetracked was because they couldn’t count on Kyrie, and they didn’t know if he was going to be out there. And the issue with Kevin is, he wants to win badly, he wants to be loyal to his friend. But I’ve been talk that relationship, while very close, isn’t always as close as it appears to be.”
