Not LeBron James, but Anthony Davis becomes Kobe Bryant’s shadow for LA Lakers
Kobe Bryant and Anthony Davis
The game against the Washington Wizards was perhaps the best game Anthony Davis has played as a Lakers since arriving in Los Angeles. Davis dropped 55 points and grabbed 17 rebounds, and if that was not enough he also blocked 3 shots. Past 9 games Davis has been averaging well over 35 points for the Lakers.
Kobe Bryant has been an inspiration for Anthony Davis. After Bryant’s death the shocked and devasted Anthony became a different beast. The same year Davis won the NBA championship and produced the greatest playoff series of his career. It was Kobe that kept not only AD but also the entire Lakers going throughout the season despite all the difficulty.
After his second career-high 55 points performance against the Washington Wizards, Davis became the only Laker since Kobe Bryant in 2013 to have 40+ points in consecutive games. That is not it, AD also became the 2nd player in NBA history after Kevin McHale, to score 55 points and have 3 blocks in the same game.
Davis has also made 40 field goals in his last two games, which has also tied him with late great Kobe Bryant for the most made field goals over the last twenty years in consecutive games. He is also the 8th Laker after Bryant, O’Neal, LeBron James, Wilt Chamberlain, Rudy LaRusso, Elgin Baylor, and George Mikan to have 50 points and grab at least 10 rebounds in the game.
Anthony Davis has given life to the Los Angeles Lakers but can they sustain it?
It’s not his numbers but the real impact of Anthony Davis finding his real identity is shown in the Lakers’ record and standing in the Western Conference. The Lakers started 2-10 in the season and right now they are 10-12 going ahead. In the last few games, The Brow has singlehandedly willed his team to victory.
Even when Lebron James was out with a groin injury and Lakers Nation was freaked out, Davis was just getting started with his victory mode. As coach Darvin Ham rightly put it, “He wants it. He wants to be that guy for the team. He has everyone rallying around him, and I’m just thrilled by the way he’s been playing.”
It’s not yet given that the Lakers are a playoff contention team right now, let alone the hopes for a championship this season. However, when in rhythm, Davis is extremely dangerous for the opposition teams. He can score at his will, dunk on multiple players’ faces at once, and has unquestionable brilliance when it comes to refusing someone a basket on his end. How far the Lakers go this season depends on AD’s rhythm and his health. Period!
