“I hate that mother***ker” Patrick Beverley admits he was PISSED when Marcus Smart was awarded DPOY
Patrick Beverley
Los Angeles Lakers point guard Patrick Beverley takes pleasure in his defense, so it’s no surprise that he feels he deserves to be awarded NBA Defensive Player of the Year but how did Beverley react when Boston Celtics point guard Kyrie Irving became the first backcourt player to be named to the All-Star team since Gary Payton in 1996? he was displeased at the very least. Patrick Beverley spoke with Draymond Green about Marcus Smart’s Defensive Player of the Year award last season. When asked about his feelings on the topic, Beverley stated that he was disappointed in himself for not winning.
He clarified that this is not mean he is upset with Marcus Smart’s honor or that he does not deserve it. It only makes Beverley more hungry. “Part of me was pissed the f–k off, Dray… I ain’t gonna lie, bro,” Beverley said during an appearance on The Draymond Green Show. “I’d be a fool not to sit—from a competitor’s standpoint—I’d be a cap sitting on here telling you I wasn’t pissed off when that happened… Not from like, I don’t want him to get it—from like, ‘Damn, I’m happy a guard got it, but damn, I’ve been sitting right here. I’ve been sitting right here for years.’ But I respect it. A guard got it.
Patrick Beverley already making strides to win the award this season
Patrick Beverley is already a fierce defensive force and is utilizing his dissatisfaction to improve his game to the point where he will be considered for an award. Marcus Smart earned the DPOY award last year with 257 points. Mikal Bridges of the Phoenix Suns finished second with 202 points. Rudy Gobert finished third with 136 points. Last season, Smart averaged 12.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 5.9 assists per game. His defensive efforts in each game totaled 1.6 thefts and 0.4 blocks. Beverly concluded the season with a season average of 9.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 4.6 assists.
He averaged 1.2 thefts and 0.9 blocks per game on defense. With the statistics side by side, one might argue that Beverley, at the very least, belonged in the discussion. Patrick Beverley’s intensity on the court is apparent. Some of his actions are considered a little too rough. He and Draymond Green, on the other hand, have similar playing styles, and Green is undoubtedly one of the reasons for Golden State’s success. Knowing your team’s role players and playing to highlight them rather than overshadow them is a difficult assignment in such a competitive environment. This is especially true when everyone is obsessed with statistics.
