NBA star Russell Westbrook and the Los Angeles Clippers have agreed to a contract extension, which has surprised both basketball fans and analysts. The agreement, which will pay Westbrook slightly more than $3.9 million per year, has sparked debates about how the media may affect players’ free-agent contracts.

Following the announcement, Patrick Beverley, a former teammate of Russell Westbrook’s and current NBA point guard, expressed his displeasure with the contract on an episode of the Pat Bev Pod. Beverley suggested that the media plays a role in determining players’ contracts during free agency.

“I think that the media is the drive toward what players get in free agency.” Beverley said. “The narrative of Westbrook, the way he plays got the payday he got, not his basketball skills.”

Despite not posting superstar numbers, Westbrook proved to be an integral part of the team after joining them midway through the season. As the starting point guard, he averaged 15.8 points, 7.6 assists, and 4.9 rebounds per game, and his contributions were even more significant during the playoffs.

During the playoffs, Westbrook stepped up in the absence of Kawhi Leonard, delivering standout performances. In Game 3 against the Suns, he recorded 30 points and 12 assists, followed by a 37-point performance in Game 4 to keep the Clippers competitive.

While the terms of Westbrook’s contract may have surprised many, it is worth considering that he may have taken a team-friendly deal to help the Clippers in their pursuit of a championship. As Westbrook reaches the later stages of his career, winning a ring before retirement likely ranks high on his priority list.

By accepting a lower salary, Westbrook allows the Clippers to allocate resources towards building a stronger roster capable of contending for an NBA title. Furthermore, it highlights the significance of players’ motivations beyond financial gain.

As the NBA offseason progresses and more contracts are signed, it will be interesting to see how other players navigate the balance between financial compensation and their pursuit of the championship.
