“Kobe Bryant can be consumed with surprising anger”: Phil Jackson wasn’t ‘Surprised’ by Kobe Bryant’s 2003 Case

Phil Jackson and Kobe Bryant

Kobe Bryant and Phil Jackson both are NBA Greats and Hall of Famers. One got the job done from the bench and the other under his guidance destroyed his rivals by winning over them. They together won five championships and made history multiple times. For many around it was hard to understand Kobe Bryant but the story is not the same for Phil Jackson. As he probably knew everything about every guy around him and there are reasons why both Black Jesus and Black Mamba wanted him on board. As he really is the greatest coach of all time.

But Kobe Bryant and Phil Jackson weren’t really the best duo out there. As the bridges between them were burnt in 2004 as things got a bit spicy between them with a lot of off-court happenings with Black Mamba. Kobe Bryant was charged with rape allegations in 2003 and that was the ugliest phase of his career. According to Black Mamba, they had consensual sex but the story from the other end wasn’t the same and he was accused of sexually assaulting a 19-years old.

The evidences also hinted toward him being nothing but a criminal but nothing was proved and the case got closed as the complainant refused to testify. The case was dropped but not forgotten and it was settled outside and the details for it were never made public. Kobe Bryant though after the case was dropped in a statement of his apologized to the woman and quoted: “Although I truly believe this encounter between us was consensual. I recognize now that she did not and does not view this incident the same way I did.”

Phil Jackson in his memoir, “The Last Season” didn’t just talk about the failed efforts of the Los Angeles Lakers who were searching for something to pull them up. But also discussed the rape allegations against Kobe Bryant and while doing so he quoted: “Was I surprised? Yes, but not entirely. Kobe can be consumed with surprising anger, which he’s displayed toward me and his teammates.”

This really shocked the world but again Phil Jackson ain’t wrong and it does make some sense. As Kobe Bryant could really be controlled by his anger and at that particular moment he may not be him. This led to their fallout as Jackson rolled out and returned a season later and they went on to win two more championships then. Because fortunately, they got things sorted between them.
