Monty Williams is the highest-paid head coach in the NBA right now, ahead of several coaches who have achieved their share of success in recent seasons. Since the time he joined the Phoenix Suns, the franchise went to the NBA finals in 2021 and made it to the playoffs every season. Now that he has taken his talents to the Detroit Pistons, the respected coach has all the backing from his new franchise.
On Tuesday, Williams, along with general manager Troy Weaver and owner Tom Gores, took the stage at Pistons Performance Center for their new head coach’s introductory press conference. However, it was something more special that caught the fans’ attention. Pistons have reportedly offered Williams access to healthcare and a private jet in order to help the former Suns’ head coach take care of his wife, who has been battling breast cancer. Moreover, the team will also help the couple to find housing and schools for their children.
With an experienced coach at their disposal and with playoff experience, the Detroit Pistons are expecting to turn things around and be one of the contending teams in the Eastern Conference. The Pistons are really trying to make Williams comfortable in the motor city. Perhaps, the Pistons believe that Williams is truly the answer to their vows. Earlier, Williams had plans to take some time off as his wife Lisa was diagnosed with breast cancer during Phoenix’s this season’s playoff run.

Since the Phoenix Suns’ playoff run came to an end, there was hardly any news from head coach Monty Williams. However, after being appointed as the head coach for Detroit Pistons, Williams talked in detail about matters pertaining to his personal life. Speaking to the media in Pistons Performance Center, the former Suns’ head coach opened up about his wife who was diagnosed with breast cancer recently.
Williams said that while the Pistons organization has been highly supportive, it was his mutual decision with his wife to go public about her health. “My wife found out she has breast cancer during the playoffs. The reason I bring that up is to not talk about the family, but to make it more of an emphasis that women need early detection testing…it might save others,” said Williams.
He also added that he did not want to take the head coach job and wanted to take care of his family. However, after a lengthy conversation with the organization, he was able to comfortably make his decision.
