Lionel Messi was deprived of the biggest footballing silverware in his 18-year spell until he stepped into Qatar in November. After sustaining a major upset via the hands of Saudi Arabia in the inaugural match, many ruled out Argentina’s hopes of lifting yet another World Cup trophy, but not the iconic No. 10.
The 35-year-old led his national team to victory in a thrilling penalty shootout against France, wherein the reigning Copa America giants won 4-2. Messi scored 2 goals in the incredible 120 minutes of football. While Kylian Mbappe became the second-ever player to score a hattrick in a World Cup Final.
That being said, as Messi finally lifted the grandest footballing trophy being the ‘King of Qatar,’ the NBA world could not hold itself back from acknowledging him as the greatest ever footballer to have embraced the sport.
