The Dallas Mavericks’ star player, Kyrie Irving finds himself navigating uncertain territory as he enters the realm of free agency. Despite his age, Irving remains highly coveted, though his potential destinations are narrowing down. The prospect of reuniting with his former teammate and friend LeBron James in Los Angeles holds significant allure for Irving. But at the same time, the growing chemistry he shares with Luka Doncic in Dallas seems promising. The question lingers: Where will Irving ultimately choose to go?

Well, Brian Windhorst might’ve found an answer to this question, and it is smarter than fans would imagine. Over the past few weeks, Irving was frequently seen sitting courtside during Lakers games. This showed Irving’s strong desire to join the Lakers and play alongside James, further indicating his readiness to become a member of the Lakers team. But according to Windhorst, it is nothing but a façade.

Per NBA Insider Windhorst, Irving shows up to Lakers’ games courtside just to extract more money from the Mavericks. He is using his presence courtside as leverage to scare his team into giving up more money. Windhorst said, “I also think that both of them, Kyrie showing up to Laker games. James Harden is rumored to be attached to the [Houston] Rockets. I still think/suspect all of that is one giant leverage play.”

Windhorst further added, “And I think that Kyrie could be doing the same exact thing [with the Mavericks]. Just doing all of this, and whatever he may do between now and free agency to try to get the juiciest offer he can from the team he’s on. ‘Cause [the Sixers and Mavericks] face the most damage from losing those guys.”

There are indications that Irving will continue his journey with the Dallas Mavericks, utilizing the maximum extension offered to him. According to a source, it is reported that there was a verbal agreement in place between Irving and the Mavericks even before the trade with the Brooklyn Nets took place. The source further emphasized that Irving’s commitment was contingent on receiving a maximum contract.

If Irving decides to re-sign with the team, the Dallas Mavericks could present him with a significant contract extension valued at $272 million over a five-year period. This considerable offer is made possible by a salary cap of $134 million.

Somewhat confirming the news, a source also said, “I hear he’s going back to Dallas on a 3+1 [a player option on the fourth year]. His contract will line up [identically] with Luka’s.”

Overall, Windhorst’s analysis does seem to be falling in place with Irving leaning towards the Mavs. Though, it’ll be interesting to see where the player finally settles.
