Reigning champs Denver Nuggets CANCEL White House trip to visit Joe Biden to prioritize Timberwolves matchup
The Nuggets set to snub the visit to the White House for a March 19 commitment, as per NBA Insider Chris Haynes.
President Joe Biden and Nikola Jokic
Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets had won their first NBA championship in franchise history after a remarkable 2022-23 season that saw them sweep all teams before them including the Los Angeles Lakers and the Miami Heat on their way to world glory.
To celebrate their victory, custom dictates that the reigning NBA champions have to visit the White House to meet with the President of the United States. But since winning the title, the Denver Nuggets are yet to make the traditional victory rounds to the famous building at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, and by the look of things it just might not happen.
As reported by NBA Insider Chris Haynes, the reigning champions will no longer visit the White House as scheduled due to their current championship aspirations. Originally scheduled to pay the customary visit in late January but it got moved by the Joe Biden administration to March 18 due to scheduling conflicts. Now, the Nuggets are prioritizing the top spot in a highly competitive Western Conference. Haynes explained in a broadcast on TNT:
Just last week I was informed that the Nuggets were concerned now because all of a sudden, after March 18, on March 19, they play the Minnesota Timberwolves in Minnesota, and now that game is a little bit more important than they had expected when they did reschedule. The Nuggets made a tough decision, but they’re canceling that trip to the White House.
The Nuggets have found their form since the All-Star break and aren’t willing to sacrifice their quest for a back-to-back championship even if it means snubbing the President of the United States of America.
The Denver Nuggets’ battle for the Western Conference No. 1 seed
The Nuggets are aiming to retain their NBA championship and have managed to be a force in the highly competitive Western Conference. Led by their superstar MVP, Nikola Jokic, the Nuggets have been in the mix all season battling it out with the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Although they still have a chance to reclaim the top spot, they have to contend with the Timberwolves and the Thunders who have been led exceptionally well by Anthony Edwards and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander respectively. However, in the last five games, Jokic, before the game against the Boston Celtics, has had an impressive stat of 24.8 points, 13.4 rebounds, and 9.2 assists per game.
With less than 20 games to play, the odds are in the favor of the Nuggets to reclaim their spot as the West’s number one team, but it surely won’t come on a platter of gold.
