“Did you watch MJ against Detroit?” Rob Parker rips apart Jason Williams for urging how Michael Jordan would struggle in modern-day

Rob Parker thrashes Jason Williams over Michael Jordan comments

Michael Jordan is considered to be epitome of NBA. The player has achieved so much in his career and importantly his efficiency and consistency was immaculate. Even his impact on the game was considered to be larger than anyone in the league, handing him the GOAT title nearly unanimously. He might not be top of every stats list but certainly present in top 10’s for most of those lists. Former NBA player Jason Williams though accepting’ MJ’s greatness, comments about Michael Jordan having an easier time scoring in his era than today. It grabbed attention of people, who thrashed Williams for his ‘yet again’ bold statements.

As per Jason Williams, His Airness would have struggled in current group of defensive teams, where he would have to face 3 defenders at a time. Though he said that MJ would be All-Star, fans of GOAT took it to social media, mocking Jason Williams for his assessment. Famously known as “White Chocolate”, Jason specifically mentioned how Gary Payton’s defense was less effective compared to Jrue Holiday’s and the back line of Brook Lopez and Giannis Antetokounmpo to deny any space to MJ.

Rob Parker, on “The Odd Couple” podcast, minced no words ripping the former NBA player for his hot take on Jordan. He said, “Jason Williams is in a “White Chocolate” coma! What are you talking about, Jason? It’s never been easier to score in the NBA. And he’s gonna say that Michael Jordan couldn’t score? Did you watch Michael Jordan against the Detroit Pistons?”

Making Williams aware about repercussion of regular bold and ‘meaningless’ statements he added, “I don’t know what his future is or what he’s trying to do if this is his podcast or what he does with it, but dude, be careful! ‘Cause, you’ll lose your credibility real quick, and it won’t matter if you played in the league.”

Would Michael Jordan find it difficult to play in current era?

Michael Jordan has not just won the championship with sheer determination, but he had scoring touch, defensive game knowledge and also high basketball IQ. His ball handles might not be very flashy for many but effective enough to beat defenders of any class. And most importantly he had one of the best, if not the best feet movements, a rare but important aspect of the game widely ignored by many.

His pristine shooting was again supported by all above attributes making him one of the top shooter and scorer of the game. We can’t forget he won 10 scoring championships in short 15 season span and was member of 9 All NBA defensive first teams in that period too – highlighting his overall dominance over the game.

While we speak about the Chicago Bulls’ MJ playing in current era of NBA, it might fascinate many to compare different defensive set ups he might needed to play against. Before Marcus Smart won the Defensive Player of the Year award in 2022, no other point guard had won it except for Gary Payton. Payton being highlighted by Jason Williams in his comments was one of the best defender of his time and was also a member of 9 all defensive teams. “The Glove’s” resume on defense was just impeccable. Considering Payton also had the benefit of hand-checking, one can only imagine the kind of leverage he had against scoring maestros like Jordan.

Also new rule change, allowing defenders to be more cautious going on the ball handler. Jordan played in an era where defenders were built to succeed. The rules made scoring difficult, which is exactly why the NBA removed hand-checking. The league wanted the offense to flourish. The rules changes would have pushed MJ to more success.

Some of former players and coaches like Mark Jackson and Jeff Van Gundy believed Michael Jordan’s offensive game would have been unstoppable today. Mark Jackson, in an interview with Shannon Sharpe, emphatically answered how Michael Jordan would dominate the modern NBA. Giving MJ choice, he said, “Michael Jordan would average whatever he’d want to average. He could get 40 a night. I’m here telling you as a witness: He would average 40 a night.”

Currently MJ holds record of highest average of points per game in the league at 30.1. And well with MJ’s game IQ, he would have easily made necessary adjustments, may be working on 3 pointers more (his current eff. is 33%) or free throws (current eff. 75%) to destroy opposition tactics on him. It’s not just the game that players play on the court, it’s the mentality with which they prepare for the game and deliver – at which there is no doubt that MJ is always at the top of the pyramid.
