“Blocking someone’s shot is almost like dunking” Robert Horry talks about importance of defence and his unbelievable defensive record
In the most recent episode of the Byron Scott podcast, Byron was joined by 7-time NBA champion Robert Horry. Robert is reminiscent of his days in the NBA as a professional basketball player before retiring in 2008 with the San Antonio Spurs after having played 16 seasons with four different franchises
Robert Horry’s NBA career was filled with victories. He is well known for his seven rings with three different teams. He really holds the record for having won seven championships without ever playing for the Boston Celtics in NBA history. He was a member of the Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal-led Los Angeles Lakers squad that won three consecutive titles.

The Houston Rockets picked Horry as a small forward with the 11th overall pick in the 1992 NBA Draft. He played for the Rockets during his first four seasons, leading them to NBA titles in 1994 and 1995. Horry set an individual NBA Finals record while playing in the Finals by recording seven steals in a game and making five three-pointers in a quarter. Horry wore the number 25 with the Rockets throughout his time there.
The Lakers were down as many as 24 points in the first half of Game 5 in Sacramento, where they were two games to one down in the series. With 11.8 seconds left, the Lakers eventually reduced the deficit to 99-97. Kobe and Shaq missed back-to-back layup attempts on the game’s final possession. To win Game 4 100-99, Horry sank a three-pointer as time ran down after the ball rebounded directly to him. For this feat Horry was called “one of the 10 best clutch players in league history,” by Magic Johnson a day later.

In his latest episode on the Byron Scott podcast, Robert Horry underlines the importance of defence in the NBA, he said “Blocking someone’s shot is almost like dunking on somebody, you can trash talk so much after that” He further stated how much he loved playing defence “I used to love playing defence and I don’t think people understood the defence I brought to table during the first four years in the NBA.
He went to say “I was the first player in NBA history to have 100 blocks, 100 rebounds and 100 three pointers in a single season in the League, OfCourse Dirk Nowitzki later went on to beat that record but hey I was the first player to achieve that”
