Russell Westbrook plays down comparisons to Nikola Jokic

As Nikola Jokic approaches the end of the season, he is close to completing a triple-double season. If he does achieve that historic figure, he will become the first since Russell Westbrook. Even though the feat may be similar, Westbrook believed no comparison exists between the two.

After facing off with each other tonight, Russell Westbrook was asked for his opinion about Jokic being a triple-double monster like him. The Clippers star responded that both were different players and shouldn’t be compared.

Ain’t nobody like me. Nobody like me. We’re gonna stop that right there. Nobody like me. Nikola is a hell of a player, but he’s not me. I’m not him. Obviously, he's MVP twice, but tough guard, excellent passer, knows how to play the game right way, competes every single night.

Westbrook alluded that he and Nikola Jokic played the game differently. The stats suggested similarities, but Westbrook believed nobody achieved an NBA record of 4 triple-double seasons like him.

It seems the Los Angeles Clippers superstar does not want anyone comparing his work on the court to anybody else. He does have a point, though, as before him, only Oscar Robertson had a triple-double season. But Westbrook is in a company of his own, as the only player ever to have multiple triple-double seasons.

Jokic is close but would require a whopping 24 assists per game over his final five games of the regular season to achieve a triple-double season. Even then, the media touted his season to be close to what Westbrook achieved in the late 2010s. Hence, Westbrook felt no comparisons held merit.

Russell Westbrook dominated the late 2010s with triple-double seasons

Russell Westbrook faced a major question after teammate Kevin Durant departed the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2016. Either he could also be traded or stay back and lead the team that drafted him. Westbrook decided to do the latter and pulled up his socks to deliver a few of the most impressive season-long performances by any player in NBA history.

Starting with his first triple-double season in 2016-17, Westbrook also won the MVP award that year. He added a couple more triple-double seasons before eventually leaving the Thunder. But in those three consecutive years, he was the single biggest reason the Oklahoma City Thunder were a playoff contender. He again repeated his triple-double production in his lone season with the Washington Wizards.

All of that culminated in him holding the record for most triple-doubles by any player in NBA history. So, to summarize, what Russell Westbrook has done with a basketball is exemplary. Therefore, comparing the Los Angeles Clippers superstar’s achievements with any other player is not an easy discussion.
