Los Angeles Clippers guard Russell Westbrook has reportedly requested to come off the bench for the Clippers. Ever since the inclusion of James Harden earlier this season, it has been rough sailing for the Clippers with a concerning record of 0-6. The Clippers guard might have the idea to turn it around for his team.

According to Bleacher Report and TNT, Russell Westbrook asked for this demand from coach Tyronn Lue to establish more continuity and chemistry between the starting unit. Westbrook is hopeful that by coming off the bench he will be able to lead the second unit effectively, while also giving freedom to James Harden to play his role of point guard better alongside two-time Championship winners Kawhi Leonard and 8-time NBA All-Star Paul George.

Westbrook came off the bench in 49 games last season for the Los Angeles Lakers, before he was traded to the Utah Jazz. Westbrook thus has the experience off the bench and leading the second unit, which might prove to be essential for the Clippers’ success. To make the Harden trade work, someone had to put up their hand in the star-stuffed clippers. Westbrook believes that this might be what the Clippers need to break their 6 games losing streak.

In compliance with Westbrook’s requests, the Clippers Coach will move the 2016-2017 MVP and nine-time NBA all-star to the sixth-man position. Terance Mann will come as his replacement and will be starting with Harden, George, Leonard, and center Ivica on Friday.

The inverse James Harden Effect: Reason for this move

With the addition of Harden to the roaster of Clippers, the Clippers have yet to win a game in the starting Lineup. Harden who led the league in assists per game last season has been struggling to find his place in the Lakers. Harden has an average of 15.0 points and 4.2 assists per game. Furthermore, the stats of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George have declined alongside Harden for the last few games, with both averaging fewer points per game.

Harden alongside Westbrook has been struggling to get anything going, with the ball not finding itself in his hands. The clash of playstyles and absence of team chemistry has sent the Clippers into a downward spiral of consecutive losses. With Westbrook moving as the sixth man, Harden might be able to put the Clippers back on the winning track.
