With just 2.03 remaining on the clock in 3rd quarter LeBron James made a pass to Russell who was left unattended by Collins when LeBron drove to the basket. As LeBron passed the ball to Westbrook he tried to dunk the ball. Collins blocked him, but Westbrook managed to collect the ball. Russ beat Collins on the pump fake but as the Spurs big man came down he hit Brodie with his elbow.

Bleeding profusely from his forehead, Westbrook got up and charged toward Collins. Before something bad could happen Westbrook was restrained by LeBron James. The King covered Russell’s forehead with a towel while he was taken towards the bench for first aid. Westbrook came back to the game after being attended and had a band-aid over his wound.

After the play’s review, Collins was slapped with a flagrant 2 foul and Russell Westbrook was also given a technical. Westbrook left the game after shooting 1 of 2 free throws. Before Russ had to go out of the game he made a highlight alley-oop to LeBron James for one of the best dunks this season so far. He finished with 39 points and 11 rebounds, while Westbrook had 11 points and 6 assists.

Russell Westbrook and Zach Collins comment on the play that made Westbrook bleed from his forehead

After the game Zach Collins made it clear that the foul on Russell Westbrook wasn’t intentional, however, it might appear. “Unfortunately, my elbow just caught his head and he started bleeding and it looked terrible, but I honestly wasn’t trying to do anything.” Collins said, via the San Antonio Express News’ Tom Orsborn.

Collins also said that he was just trying to avoid an and-1 situation and preventing Westbrook to throw the ball to the right. “And then the worst thing you can do is give up an and-1 in that situation, so I was just trying to come down and hit his arm so the ball wouldn’t get up to the rim,” Collins added.

Commenting on the play by Collins, Russell Westbrook said when a play of such kind happens it is hard to keep the head composed. “Initially, the reaction is obviously to hop up and kind of see what’s going on,” Westbrook said of the altercation. Westbrook also added that once finding himself bleeding all over, he wanted to take care of it and then continue with the game. The Lakers won the game 143-138 with significant contributions from Austin Reaves who finished with 16 points, Lonnie Walker IV (19 points), and Dennis Schroder who ended up scoring 21 points.
