LSU freshman Sa’Myah Smith had a scary moment on Friday when she collapsed during a White House ceremony honoring the Tigers’ 2023 national championship. Smith was standing behind President Joe Biden as he praised the team for their historic season. Suddenly, she lost consciousness and fell to the floor. Her teammates and coaches rushed to her aid and carried her out of the room in a wheelchair.
Biden stopped his speech and apologized for the incident. He said it was normal for people to faint at such events due to the long standing time. “It’s okay. It’s happened lots of times,” he said.
LSU coach Kim Mulkey later told reporters that Smith was fine and that she had been feeling sick before the ceremony. She said Smith was a tough and brave player who had overcome many challenges in her life. “As you can see, we leave our mark where we go,” Mulkey said. “Sa’Myah planned that. No, Sa’Myah is fine, for those of you who are concerned.“
Smith averaged 4.6 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game in her first year at LSU.

The incident sparked a lot of reactions on Twitter, some supportive and some not so much. Some users blamed Biden for making Smith faint and cracking jokes about his age and health. Others defended Biden and slammed the trolls for being rude and heartless. They praised Smith for her accomplishments and wished her well.
The team and the administration had a rocky relationship before, but they put that behind them on Friday. Jill Biden had wanted to invite Iowa, the team that LSU beat in the final, to the White House too. That didn’t sit well with LSU star Angel Reese, who scored 23 points per game this season. But Reese showed no hard feelings when she hugged Jill Biden and gave Jill a jersey with her name on it.
