Shannon Sharpe has been critical of Kyrie Irving in past. Sharpe has been critical of Kyrie’s stand on the NBA’s bubble stand, his vaccine stand and his sharing of an antisemitic documentary. But when Brooklyn Nets slapped multiple conditions on Kyrie to fulfill in order to return to the team Shannon Sharpe came out and criticized the Nets Organization for doing too much.
In a talk with Skip Bayless on Undisputed Sharpe said, “I’ve been very critical of Kyrie, but what Brooklyn is doing is a bit much.” Irving has apologized after the Brooklyn Nets slapped conditions for his return. Earlier, NBPA vice president Jaylen Brown came out and said that “The terms for his return, they seem like a lot, and a lot of the players expressed discomfort with the terms.” Shannon said, “It wasn’t enough that he tried to apologize… I believe that they are trying to rob a man of his dignity.”
Shannon believes Brooklyn is trying to set an example for other players in the organization. He remarked, “Right now what Brooklyn is trying to do is trying to put him in front of all the world to see. You see what happens, if you do this, others this is what could possibly happen to you. I don’t agree with that. For me, that’s a bit much.”
Brooklyn Nets have suspended Irving for at least five games and laid out the terms of his return to the team. Jaylen Brown, who is also the VC of NBPA believes that he expects NBPA to challenge the terms of Kyrie’s return. So far Irving himself has remained silent on the terms and conditions for his return. In light of the incidents between Kyrie and the Brooklyn Nets, it is highly unlikely that Irving returns to the Nets next season.
Shannon Sharpe weights on Kyrie Irving’s possible trade to the Lakers
This offseason there were numerous reports regarding possible deals the Los Angeles Lakers could make with Brooklyn Nets regarding the Kyrie Irving trade. Kyrie Irving was expected to opt out of the deal with the Nets since they did not offer him a max extension. After he accepted the 1-year extension with the Nets, there is still a rumor that he could sign with the Lakers next year.
Weighing on the reports that the Lakers are highly unlikely to trade for Kyrie due to the controversy surrounding him, Shannon Sharpe shared an interesting opinion on Undisputed. According to Shannon Sharpe, if you trade for Kyrie you accept for who he is and what he brings along. He remarked, “You trade for Kyrie Irving, you accept him as is.” He added, “If you okay with that side that comes along with basketball player, by any means take it.”
Sharpe added Irving is a phenomenal basketball player and one of the best guards in the league’s history. He then added, “but there is another side of Kyrie that you are gonna have to deal with”. Irving has been under severe criticism from Sharpe and others for sharing the link to a documentary on his social media that contained antisemitic sentiments.
