“Russ just built an empire, not a 2,3,4 billion dollar empire” Shannon Sharpe reveals the exact problem Russell Westbrook is dealing with
Shannon Sharpe and Russell Westbrook
Former MVP and star Russell Westbrook recently entered the advertising sector, diversifying his business ventures. It seems to be a bit distracting move, a move away from the game where he is actually earning fame, name, and money to start with. But he looks to have shifted his focus away from basketball as he has started showing more interest in the business side of things. Shannon Sharpe of Undisputed shared his thoughts on how Westbrook’s misguided priorities are affecting his basketball career, though his concerns for his family’s future might be true.
After a horrific NBA season Lakers roaster and young stars are sweating it out at Gyms, making amendments to their games. One would think that heavily criticized Westbrook would also be in the gym working on improving his game or at least making adjustments to his game under Darvin Ham. However, there have been reports that he’s more invested in his off-court business than his basketball career.
Shannon Sharp was also shocked with the priorities Westbrook gave in the off-season, and thrashed the megastar for his un-pro behavior. When asked about which is more important for Russell Westbrook, business or basketball, Sharpe said, “I felt it showed in his play last year that other things were more important. All I’m saying is I got no problem…Russ build the biggest empire! Build a 2, 3, 4, 5 billion dollar empire. I got no problem with that. The only problem I got with Russ is that he refused to accept accountability when he plays bad and when things aren’t going well.”
Russ earned his name in NBA, reached the fame in NBA, and all the commercial profits, and even salaries are through his franchise and league; so it was expected of him to prioritize his game over other aspirations.
Russell Westbrook already planning for a post NBA career
Former OKC megastar Westbrook of course has accomplished a lot during his 13-year-long NBA career. He’s been a scoring champion, assist champion, and Most Valuable Player, selected as All-Star multiple times. He even broke triple-double records. However, he is yet to win a championship. With his latest collaboration at the Lakers, it was expected of him to make the push for the title with a potentially very dynamic duo in AD-LBJ.
But since 2017, his team has always been eliminated in the first round of the playoffs except for 2020, when James Harden and the Houston Rockets managed to get past Chris Paul and Westbrook’s former team, the Oklahoma City Thunder, and in 2022, he couldn’t put the Lakers in the postseason.
Wherein many expected a player of Russ’s status and stardom to take things in hand to turn things around, lately, people have pointed out Westbrook’s lack of accountability for the Lakers’ disappointing season. That includes Shannon Sharpe, who has expressed his frustrations with the Los Angeles Lakers several times before.
Westbrook was in many trade rumors, the most constructive was a swap for Irving, but it is also slowly dying. Now, it seems as though the Lakers will be running it back with the former MVP. Finishing last season with one of his worst shooting splits, Westbrook has a lot to work on before the 2022-23 season kicks in.
But his current interests in new business ventures suggest something different. With man cars dealerships, endorsements, ongoing investment ventures, and now an advertising firm takes him away from the game and more into the business world.
While it is perfectly fine to think about and take care of the family’s future, one should always respect the “source of income” or foundation on which the new empire is built.
